ML Buch Pioneer Works NYC: An Unmissable Evening of Experimental Sounds

Pioneer Works is thrilled to announce the highly anticipated New York City return of the innovative Danish artist ML Buch. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 10, 2024, as the Main Hall at Pioneer Works will be transformed into a sonic landscape crafted by ML Buch, with captivating support from FAUZIA and Los Thuthanaka. This promises to be an evening where experimental music and boundary-pushing artistry take center stage.

ML Buch, the moniker of Copenhagen-based Marie Louise Buch, is a composer, producer, guitarist, and vocalist who has been steadily gaining international recognition for her unique and genre-defying sound. Her approach to music is deeply rooted in experimentation and a fascination with sonic architecture. Buch’s creative process involves a hands-on, almost sculptural method, where she builds her compositions through immersive playing and intuitive assembly. This method allows for moments of spontaneous brilliance and unexpected sonic textures to emerge, making each piece a journey of discovery for both the artist and the listener.

Her musical journey began with the EP ‘Fleshy’ in 2017, which offered a glimpse into her burgeoning talent. However, it was her debut album ‘Skinned,’ released in 2020 on the Danish label Anyines, that truly solidified her position as a force to be reckoned with in experimental music. ‘Skinned’ garnered critical acclaim for its innovative soundscapes and Buch’s distinctive vocal and instrumental work. In October 2023, ML Buch unveiled her ambitious second full-length project, ‘Suntub,’ a double album featuring 15 tracks, released via 15 love. ‘Suntub’ further showcases her evolution as an artist, demonstrating a broader palette of sounds and a deeper exploration of her compositional techniques.

Live performances are a crucial aspect of ML Buch’s artistic expression. Whether performing solo or with a group, she masterfully blends the raw energy of 7-string electric guitars in open tunings with the expansive possibilities of synthetic instruments and electronic experiments. This fusion creates a live experience that is both visceral and intellectually stimulating. ML Buch’s performances have graced prestigious stages including Pitchfork Paris Avant-Garde, Roskilde Festival, and Fuchsbau Arts Festival. She has also participated in the sound and vision program at CPH:DOX and contributed her unique vocal textures to Laurie Anderson’s Talking Choir project, further highlighting her versatility and collaborative spirit. Beyond her solo work, ML Buch has engaged in commissioned projects with poet Ingvild Lothe and contributed to releases by acclaimed artists such as CTM, Jura, and Astrid Sonne, with whom she has also shared the stage.

Adding to the eclectic and vibrant atmosphere of the evening is Los Thuthanaka, a group founded by artists Chuquimamani-Condori & Joshua Chuquimia Crampton, representing the Great Pakajaqui Nation. Los Thuthanaka’s music is a powerful bridge connecting the past, present, and future of their heritage. They masterfully weave together inherited ceremonial melodies with the raw energy of psychedelic rock and the minimalist aesthetics of the American West Coast. This unique blend creates a sound that is both deeply rooted in tradition and boldly forward-thinking, offering a captivating sonic experience that transcends genres and cultural boundaries.

Opening the night is FAUZIA, a multi-disciplinary artist hailing from London, whose artistic journey began in the realm of dance music through her work with NTS. FAUZIA initially made her mark as a DJ, immersing herself in the vibrant world of electronic music. During the pandemic, she channeled her creative energies into production, a shift that led to the release of projects showcasing her own vocals and collaborations with renowned artists like Kelela and George Riley. Her productions quickly garnered attention and praise from influential music publications including Resident Advisor, Mixmag, Pitchfork, and Crack, solidifying her reputation as a rising force in electronic music. FAUZIA’s debut live show at Wysing Polyphonic in 2021 marked another significant step in her artistic evolution, leading to support slots for artists like Loraine James & Space Afrika. A testament to her growing popularity and captivating live performances, FAUZIA sold out her first headline show at Southbank Centre’s Purcell room, accompanied by her band. Currently, she is diligently working on her official debut release, promising even more exciting developments in her already impressive career.

This event at Pioneer Works offers a rare opportunity to witness the convergence of diverse and cutting-edge musical talents. From the experimental soundscapes of ML Buch to the genre-blending artistry of Los Thuthanaka and the electronic innovation of FAUZIA, the evening promises a rich tapestry of sounds and a celebration of contemporary music at its most adventurous. Don’t miss the chance to experience Ml Buch Pioneer Works on December 10th for a night of unforgettable performances.
