Step Back in Time at Pioneer Airport: Vintage Aircraft & Rides Await

EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wisconsin — (April 30, 2024) — Aviation enthusiasts can journey back to the golden age of air travel as Pioneer Airport at the EAA Aviation Museum reopens for its 2024 season on May 4. Pioneer Airport, a unique living history exhibit, will be accessible on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until Memorial Day, after which it will welcome visitors daily through Labor Day.

Entry to Pioneer Airport is included with the standard museum admission. Visitors will be treated to a remarkable display of over 50 vintage airplanes housed in seven hangars. These aircraft represent a wide range of aviation history, spanning from the roaring twenties to the early 1970s, offering a glimpse into the evolution of flight.

“EAA founder Paul Poberezny established Pioneer Airport nearly four decades ago with the vision of creating an immersive experience for museum attendees,” explains Jeff Toline, EAA Director of Aircraft Operations. “He wanted to showcase EAA’s collection of antique aircraft within an authentic ‘barnstormer’ environment.” Toline further emphasized the unique opportunity for both children and adults to experience airplane rides, creating a memorable and exclusive ‘Only in Oshkosh’ adventure.

For those seeking an even more immersive experience, Pioneer Airport offers the thrill of taking to the skies from its charming grass runway. Younger aviation enthusiasts, aged 8 to 17, can participate in EAA’s Young Eagles program and enjoy a complimentary introductory flight in an amateur-built aircraft. Adults aged 16 and above have the opportunity to purchase a ride in one of two meticulously maintained vintage, open-cockpit biplanes: a classic 1927 Swallow or a stylish 1929 Travel Air. Biplane rides are priced at $95 and can be booked on the day of your visit directly at Pioneer Airport. It is important to note that all airplane rides are subject to weather conditions and operational considerations to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all participants.
