Robert (Bob) Edward Michael, a long-time resident of Pendleton, Oregon, peacefully passed away on May 10, 2020, at the age of 94. Born in Pilot Rock, Oregon, on March 15, 1926, to Charles and Ethel Michael, Robert lived a full and impactful life deeply rooted in his community. His life journey, marked by service, dedication, and love for his family and friends, was recently celebrated by loved ones, with services being streamed live from Pendleton Pioneer Chapel Folsom-Bishop.
A Lifetime of Dedication in Eastern Oregon
Robert’s connection to Eastern Oregon began in Pilot Rock, where he graduated high school after briefly enlisting in the Army. His commitment to service extended beyond the military. He married his sweetheart, Shirley J Rasmussen, in 1948, and together they built their life in Pendleton, raising their children David and Susan. Pendleton became the backdrop for Robert’s professional and community endeavors.
For over 35 years, Robert was a familiar face as “the gas man” for Pendleton Grain Growers. Driving a petroleum truck, he traversed the back roads from Pilot Rock to John Day, forging lasting friendships with his customers. Retirement from PGG didn’t mean slowing down for Robert. He spent another 22 years driving truck for Newtson Brothers during harvest, showcasing his tireless work ethic.
Community Involvement and Service
Robert’s heart was deeply invested in the Pendleton community. He dedicated years to Little League and Babe Ruth, not only as a coach but also as a board member and groundskeeper. His commitment to local organizations was further exemplified by his long-standing membership in the VFW and the Pendleton Elks Lodge, where he served in numerous officer positions.
A highlight of each year for Robert was the Pendleton Round Up. As a lifelong volunteer, he could always be found at the VFW Cowboy breakfast, expertly manning “his” grill and serving up legendary pancakes. His community spirit extended to his faith as a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and his interests in local history as part of the Pendleton Travel Club and Umatilla County Historical Society. Robert’s contributions were recognized when he was named Pendleton First Citizen, Man of the Year in 1981, a testament to his positive impact on the city.
Family, Travel, and Cherished Memories
Alongside his community involvement, Robert cherished time with his family and friends. He and Shirley enjoyed travels across America, but his heart always returned to “the Cabin” near Indian Lake, outside Pilot Rock. Hunting, motorcycle rides, snowmobiling, and fishing trips created lasting memories with loved ones. In his later years, he found joy in card games at the Elks Lodge, tending his yard, and supporting his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their sports and activities. Visits with family and friends remained a constant source of happiness.
Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife Shirley, his parents, and several siblings. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. While a public Celebration of Life is planned for a later date, a private family gathering was held at Skyview Cemetery on May 20, 2020. The service was thoughtfully streamed live from Pendleton Pioneer Chapel Folsom-Bishop, allowing those near and far to pay their respects.
For those wishing to honor Robert’s memory, the family suggests contributions to a charity of your choice, in care of Pendleton Pioneer Chapel, 131 S. E. Byers Avenue, Pendleton, OR 97801.
