The story of Shoji Spa began in 2006, born from the vision of Roberta Jordan after her travels in Japan ignited a passion for the country’s holistic approach to well-being. Inspired by the Japanese emphasis on wellness and harmony with nature, she set out to create a similar haven within the breathtaking landscape of the North Carolina mountains and the expansive Pisgah National Forest. Her dream was to offer a space where guests could experience the restorative power of Japanese spa traditions in a natural setting.

Upon arrival and check-in, guests are welcomed into the Shoji Spa experience with the offer of a traditional Japanese Yukata, a comfortable cotton robe, and sandals. Changing into these garments is the first step in transitioning into a state of relaxation. From there, guests are guided to their private hot tub, nestled amongst the trees. The gentle walk through the spa grounds, with its thoughtful architecture and landscaping, serves as an invitation to fully unwind and embrace the peaceful ambiance.

The hot tubs at Shoji Spa are more than just hot water; they are transformative hydrotherapy pools infused with salts to encourage deep muscle relaxation and promote healing. Guests are asked to take a refreshing shower before entering the tub, preparing both body and mind for the experience. For $90 per person, guests can indulge in an hour-long soak, which also includes access to the 180-degree wet cedar sauna and invigorating open-air double-cold showers for contrast therapy – a traditional practice known for its wellness benefits. For an enhanced experience, guests can opt for tub-side Japanese tea service, where the spa’s Signature Tea Blend, raw honey, and Japanese tea crackers are brought directly to your tub, adding a touch of Japanese hospitality to your soak.

During our visit, we chose the traditional soak to fully immerse ourselves in the core experience. While the hydrotherapy tubs were incredibly soothing, it was the setting that truly elevated the experience. Surrounded by the quietude of the woods, the concept of forest bathing, a Japanese practice of connecting with nature through sensory immersion, naturally came to mind. Shoji Spa embodies this concept by placing their tubs directly within the forest itself. The grounding and calming effect of being immersed in nature while enjoying the warm, therapeutic waters is truly profound and cannot be overstated.
