Recognizing the critical need to address social isolation among seniors, the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts launched Golden Encore to bring professional performing artists directly to senior communities. This innovative program serves various locations, including senior centers, assisted living and memory care facilities, residential community centers, and public libraries, making high-quality arts accessible where seniors live, congregate, and receive care.
The inspiration for Golden Encore stems from the “Seniors Quality of Life Survey” conducted in March 2022 by HELLO Project, Truckee Meadows Tomorrow, and UNR. The survey highlighted significant challenges faced by seniors in Washoe County: a staggering 76.5% reported feeling isolated, 77.1% felt left out, and 76.5% experienced barriers to community participation. Alarmingly, the suicide rate among seniors in Washoe County is double the national average. Driven by these findings and the well-documented health benefits of arts engagement, the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts developed Golden Encore to meaningfully improve the quality of life for seniors in our region.
Golden Encore artists offer diverse programs encompassing music, movement, historical insights, and nostalgic journeys down memory lane. Each program is thoughtfully designed with expert-endorsed components known to positively impact seniors’ mental and physical well-being, informed by research and specialized training. The Golden Encore program is generously supported by an award from the Washoe County Community Reinvestment Grant Program.
