Tragedy at Lake Pioneer: Canoe Capsizes, Leading to Drowning

Pioneer Police Department has released details regarding a tragic incident at Lake Pioneer, confirming the drowning of a 25-year-old man. On the evening of September 18, 2024, emergency responders were dispatched to Lake Pioneer off Lakeshore Drive following reports of a possible drowning. Upon arrival, officers learned of a boating accident where a canoe had capsized, leading to the disappearance of one individual underwater.

Local agencies initiated an immediate rescue operation to locate the victim. However, these initial efforts proved unsuccessful, transitioning the mission to a recovery operation. The search involved a collaborative effort from multiple agencies across Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. After extensive searching, the body of Logan Donald Ries, 25, of Montpelier, was recovered from Lake Pioneer at 7:17 p.m. on September 20, 2024.
