The Pioneer Cellular Event Center stands as a state-of-the-art, 93,000 square-foot facility, centrally located in Weatherford, Oklahoma. This ambitious project was born from the City of Weatherford’s “Vision 2020” strategic plan, becoming a tangible reality thanks to the “Yes! Weatherford” sales tax initiative, the dedication of SWOSU students, and the unwavering support of Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Breaking ground in December 2011 and officially opening in January 2014, the Pioneer Cellular Event Center boasts an arena with a seating capacity of approximately 4,000. This venture is a testament to community collaboration, with funding sourced equally from the City of Weatherford sales tax, university students, and the University itself – each contributing $7 million. Furthermore, alumni generosity has added over $90,000 to establish an alumni center on the lower level, highlighting the deep connection between the university and its graduates.

Strategically positioned adjacent to ASAP Energy Field, the event center enhances the game-day experience for SWOSU football by providing supplementary suite and restroom facilities. A highlight of the facility is the exclusive top-floor VIP suite, offering panoramic views of both the football field and the arena. This premium space is designed to host donors, facilitate meetings, and serve as a versatile suite for both game days and special events. Beyond the arena and suites, the Pioneer Cellular Event Center is equipped with modern locker rooms, coaches’ offices, the Legacy Bank Media Room, and the Dr. Michael E. Kiehn Athletic Training Facility. A variety of multifunctional rooms further expand the center’s versatility, accommodating athletic competitions, university functions, and community gatherings alike. Adding to its appeal is the newly installed SWOSU Athletics Hall of Fame kiosk, prominently located on the north side of the main floor concourse, celebrating the university’s rich athletic history.

Economic impact projections paint a promising picture, estimating an average annual draw of at least 25,500 visitors to Western Oklahoma through events at the Pioneer Cellular Event Center. These events, encompassing concerts, corporate functions, trade shows, state tournaments, and more, are anticipated to generate visitor spending of around $870,000 annually. This substantial economic activity underscores the center’s role as a significant economic driver for Weatherford, Western Oklahoma, and the entire state.

August 5, 2013, marked the official naming announcement, with the facility becoming the Pioneer Cellular Event Center. This name reflects a joint venture between Pioneer Cellular, SWOSU, and the City of Weatherford, granting Pioneer Cellular exclusive naming rights and solidifying a strong partnership within the community.

The inaugural collegiate basketball games took place on January 25, 2014, with the Bulldogs facing their rivals, Northwestern Oklahoma State, in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 2,545. Shortly after, as part of the SWOSU Panorama series, renowned comedian Bill Cosby graced the stage on April 3, 2014, marking the Pioneer Cellular Event Center’s debut as a premier entertainment venue. Since then, the center has consistently hosted local basketball tournaments, and the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) has become a regular presence, choosing Weatherford as a venue for postseason games nearly every year.

The Pioneer Cellular Event Center achieved national recognition on January 28, 2017, when the Bulldog Basketball teams were selected for the NCAA Division II Basketball Showcase. SWOSU proudly hosted Great American Conference rival Arkansas Tech, with both games broadcast live on the American Sports Network, further elevating the center’s profile on a national stage. The Pioneer Cellular Event Center continues to be a vital asset for Weatherford and Western Oklahoma, hosting diverse events and fostering community engagement.
