Springfield Declares 211 Day with United Way of Pioneer Valley

Springfield, MA celebrated ‘211 Day’ on Friday, February 11, 2022, highlighting the crucial 211 service in partnership with the United Way of Pioneer Valley. Mayor Domenic J. Sarno, City Councilor Maria Perez, and State Representative Angelo J. Puppolo, Jr., alongside Springfield Police Department officials, joined United Way of Pioneer Valley President and CEO Paul Mina and community supporters at the United Way’s Community Service Center. The event at 1441 Main Street recognized the vital role of 211, a service connecting residents to health and human service programs.

The ceremony featured a virtual address from Lt. Governor Karyn Polito, who commended the Massachusetts United Way for their dedication to the state’s 211 system and officially declared February 11, 2022, as Massachusetts 211 Day. Mayor Sarno followed suit, presenting a proclamation for the City of Springfield, further emphasizing the city’s commitment to this important resource.

Mayor Sarno expressed his gratitude to state leaders, including Lt. Governor Polito and Health and Human Services Secretary Marylou Sudders, for ensuring access to mental health resources through 211, especially during the ongoing challenges of COVID-19. He specifically acknowledged Paul Mina and the United Way of Pioneer Valley team for their continuous community support, noting the organization’s century-long dedication. The Mayor underscored the increased importance of mental health support during these times and praised United Way’s proactive role.

Every February 11th, United Ways nationwide promote 2-1-1 Day to increase awareness of the 211 public service. Mass2-1-1 offers a 24/7/365 information and referral service via phone and web throughout Massachusetts. Crucially, Call2Talk, the mental health helpline of Mass2-1-1, provides specialized support for those in need.

This co-location reinforces the partnership and accessibility of these vital community services.
