Driving up the winding path to Shoji Spa, located moments from downtown Asheville, the initial impression is one of understated charm. However, stepping inside this spa facility is akin to crossing continents, transporting you to a realm of Japanese-inspired tranquility far removed from the everyday bustle of Western North Carolina.

Shoji Spa’s story began in 2006 when founder Roberta Jordan returned from Japan, deeply inspired by the nation’s profound emphasis on holistic wellness. Driven by this inspiration, she envisioned and created a Japanese-style spa nestled within the beautiful landscape of the North Carolina mountains and the expansive Pisgah National Forest.
Upon arrival and check-in, guests are gracefully transitioned into relaxation mode. They are provided with a traditional Japanese Yukata, a comfortable cotton robe, and sandals. From there, they are guided to their private open-air hot tub, each secluded amongst the trees. The gentle walk itself sets the tone for the peaceful experience ahead. The thoughtful architecture and landscaping of the facility serve as a silent invitation to fully unwind and embrace tranquility.

The hot tubs at Shoji Spa are more than just warm water; they are transformative hydrotherapy pools infused with salts to encourage deep muscle relaxation and promote healing. Guests are asked to take a refreshing shower before entering the tub to fully benefit from the experience. An hour-long soak is priced at $90 per person and includes access to the 180-degree wet cedar sauna, as well as invigorating open-air double-cold showers designed for contrast therapy. For an enhanced experience, guests can opt for tub-side Japanese tea service for an additional charge, complete with Shoji’s Signature Tea Blend, raw honey, and delicate Japanese tea crackers.

During our visit, we chose the traditional soak experience to fully immerse ourselves in the spa’s offerings. Beyond the soothing waters, the natural setting truly elevated the experience. The peacefulness of the surrounding woods immediately evokes the Japanese practice of forest bathing, or Shinrin-yoku, where spending time in nature is intended to foster a connection with the environment through all senses. Shoji Spa takes this concept to a new level by placing their tubs directly within the heart of the forest. The grounding and calming effects of this immersion in nature are truly profound and undeniable.
