Discovering the Charm of Pioneer Village in Salem, Massachusetts

Beyond the bustling downtown Salem, and away from the crowds seeking witches, lies a unique historical gem: Pioneer Village Salem Massachusetts. During our exploration of Salem, documented in A Season with the Witch, one of the most memorable experiences was a visit to this living history museum. It wasn’t in the typical tourist hotspots, nor was it filled with Halloween frenzy. Instead, we found a tranquil and immersive event in the woods called “The Dark of Night,” offering a different perspective of Salem’s rich past.

Located in Forest River Park, a short distance from downtown Salem, Pioneer Village 1630 is a recreation of a colonial settlement. This walled village, comprising around half a dozen buildings, offers a secluded and authentic glimpse into early 17th-century life. Built in 1930 to commemorate the tercentenary of Massachusetts’ founding, Pioneer Village has faced periods of neglect but is now experiencing a revival.

Our visit began after nightfall for the “Dark of Night” event. Entering through the village gate into complete darkness, we were guided by lantern light to a crackling fire, joining other visitors. The late autumn New England chill was palpable, and the only light sources were the warm orange glows emanating from the windows of the surrounding wooden houses. In small groups, we were led into different homes where costumed volunteers recounted captivating ghost stories, creating an immersive and unique Halloween experience, reminiscent of traditional trick-or-treating, but with a historical twist.

Adding to the enchantment was the realization that we were walking through a familiar movie set. Pioneer Village 1630 served as a filming location for the opening scenes of the beloved Halloween movie Hocus Pocus. The second house we entered, where we listened to a chilling tale of a cornfield ghost, was none other than Thackery Binx’s cottage from the film. Listening to ghost stories inside Thackery Binx’s cottage at night was an unforgettable, meta experience.

Intrigued by our nighttime adventure, we returned to Pioneer Village the next morning for a daytime tour. Despite the biting early winter chill and threatening skies, our guides, braving the cold, shared the story of Salem’s beginnings, a narrative often overshadowed by the infamous witch trials at Gallows Hill. Pioneer Village provides a crucial perspective, focusing on the establishment of the settlement itself.

These visits to Pioneer Village Salem Massachusetts were truly enriching. In a season often dominated by urban Halloween festivities, escaping to this historical site offered a much-needed connection to the past. Sometimes, the best way to celebrate the harvest season is to step back in time, 400 years to be exact, and explore the roots of New England.
