Ongoing Project: Preserving History – The 1881 Logging Locomotive
Be a part of history preservation at the Pioneer Museum of Alabama. We are dedicated to restoring our authentic 1881 logging locomotive, a remarkable piece of industrial heritage displayed on our museum grounds in Troy. This historic train, generously donated in 1992 by Earl M. McGowin, holds a special connection to the region – Elonzo Huble Williams, father of the legendary Hank Williams Sr., served as an engineer on this very locomotive for the W. T. Smith Lumber Company in Chapman, Alabama.
Locomotive Number 14 is in need of crucial restoration work, including cleaning, repairs, and repainting to ensure its long-term preservation. We invite you to contribute to this vital project. Donations to support the train restoration can be made by mailing a check with “Train Fundraiser 2023” in the memo to Pioneer-Museum of Alabama, 248 US Hwy 231 N, Troy, AL, 36081. For a more immersive experience, visit the Pioneer Museum of Alabama, tour our exhibits, and make your donation in person!
