Sliced onions soaking in buttermilk, a key step for flavorful Pioneer Woman Onion Strings.
The secret to incredibly flavorful onion strings starts with thinly slicing your onion. Once sliced, place the onion slices in a baking dish and completely cover them with buttermilk. Let them soak for at least one hour. This buttermilk soak is crucial, infusing the onions with a wonderful tang and tenderness. Don’t skip this step for the best flavor!
If you don’t have buttermilk on hand, you can easily substitute with milk. Alternatively, you can make a quick buttermilk substitute by adding about two tablespoons of white vinegar to almost 2 cups of milk. Let it sit for a few minutes to slightly curdle before using.
In a separate bowl, combine your dry ingredients – the flour, salt, and cayenne pepper. Set this aside. Now, heat your canola oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius).
Take a handful of the buttermilk-soaked onions, dredge them in the flour mixture, and gently shake off any excess flour. Carefully place the floured onions into the hot oil. Fry for just a few minutes, until they turn a beautiful golden brown and are crispy. Remove them from the oil as soon as they reach this perfect color to avoid burning.
