Tips for the Best Pioneer Woman Sausage and Potato Soup

To make sure your Pioneer Woman Sausage and Potato Soup turns out perfectly, here are a few helpful tips:

  • Sausage Selection: Hot Italian sausage gives this soup its signature kick. However, for a milder version, feel free to use sweet Italian sausage. You can also use different types of sausage to experiment with the flavor profile.
  • Potato Prep: Russet potatoes hold up well in soup and provide a hearty texture. Make sure to cut them into uniform cubes for even cooking.
  • Kale or Spinach: Kale adds a slightly bitter and robust flavor, while spinach offers a milder taste and softer texture. Both work wonderfully in this soup, so choose based on your preference.
  • Creaminess: Heavy cream adds richness and creaminess to the soup. For a lighter option, you can use half-and-half or even milk, but the soup will be less creamy.
  • Spice Level: The crushed red pepper flakes provide a gentle heat. Adjust the amount to your liking or omit them entirely if you prefer no spice. You can always add a pinch of cayenne pepper for extra heat lovers.
  • Thickening the Soup: Mashing a cup of the cooked potatoes and returning them to the pot is a simple trick to thicken the soup naturally without using flour or cornstarch, keeping it wholesome and hearty just like Pioneer Woman recipes.
