IBG Models has released their new Scammell Pioneer, the first in a series that includes the artillery tractor and transporter variants. Modelers will find this kit largely excellent, offering great fit and refined detailing. However, as Andy’s pioneer modeling demonstrates, there are areas for improvement, notably the windscreen shape which is not entirely accurate.
Beyond the windscreen, Andy’s pioneer modeling approach identified some simplifications and missing elements in the IBG kit. To enhance realism, Andy added details like the linkages for the chassis-mounted winch. A scratch-built access ladder replaced the kit’s omission, and several rear brackets and fixtures were enhanced or replaced for greater accuracy. The molded-on boarding steps on the fuel tank were removed and substituted with more scale-appropriate alternatives.
For the crane rigging, the kit provides only thread. Andy’s pioneer modeling expertise utilized Eureka copper cable for the two winches, and a KFS Models detail set supplied pulleys and shackles for the rear crane assembly, significantly upgrading this area.
Despite these minor drawbacks, Andy’s experience shows the kit is enjoyable to build. The scratch building elements were considered a fun challenge rather than tedious work. While Thunder Models offers a potentially superior alternative, the IBG kit remains a worthwhile purchase, especially if priced competitively.
This particular model, a testament to Andy’s pioneer modeling skills, is finished as a Russian lend-lease vehicle. It is painted in SCC2, deviating from the 4BO color suggested in the kit instructions, adding another layer of historical accuracy and detail to the build.
