Honoring a Genetics Pioneer: Gregor Mendel at Villanova University

Villanova University, an institution rooted in the Augustinian Order since 1842, proudly carries the legacy of Gregor Mendel, a 19th-century Augustinian friar. Mendel, a teacher, biologist, and mathematician, revolutionized our understanding of genes, heredity, and crossbreeding. His groundbreaking work continues to inspire and shape scientific exploration at Villanova.

Mendel Science Center

The Mendel Science Center at Villanova stands as a testament to this genetics pioneer. This state-of-the-art facility serves as a hub for students and faculty engaged in teaching, learning, and research, ensuring Mendel’s legacy lives on. His foundational discoveries remain integral to the study of natural and physical sciences within the University’s curriculum.

Mendel Statue

A striking seven-foot bronze statue of Gregor Mendel graces the area in front of the Mendel Science Center, facing Mendel Field. This monumental sculpture, commissioned in 1998 from James Peniston of Laran Bronze, mirrors Theodore Charlemont’s 1910 Mendel memorial in Brno, Czech Republic. Originally erected in Mendel Square by “friends of science,” it now stands as a powerful symbol of Mendel’s pioneering contributions to genetics at Villanova.

Mendel Papers

Villanova University’s collection includes four original papers by Gregor Mendel.[1] Among them is his seminal work, “Versuche über Pflanzen-Hybriden” (Experiments in Plant Hybridization), published in 1866. This historic volume, gifted to Falvey Library in 1999 by the Augustinians, is the cornerstone of the Mendeliana Collection and is available in the Villanova Digital Library.

Mendel Microscope

The University also possesses a microscope believed to have been used by Mendel. This Plössl microscope, originating from the Vienna workshop of Simon Plössl (1794-1868), stands 10.25 inches tall and bears the signature “Plössl in Wein.” Discovered within the Villanova Collection, the exact history of its arrival at the University remains unknown, adding an element of mystery to this significant artifact.

Mendel Medal

Since 1928, Villanova University has honored distinguished scientists through the Mendel Medal Award, recognizing both their scientific achievements and religious convictions. Re-established in 1993 as an annual award after a 25-year hiatus, the Mendel Medal celebrates individuals who, like Gregor Mendel, have made significant contributions to science. A list of past recipients is available for review, showcasing the prestige of this award.
