Materials You’ll Need

  • Pioneer Woman Patchwork Tablecloth (size depends on your window)
  • Wide pocket curtain rods
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Measuring tape
  • Pins (optional, but helpful)
  • Painter’s tape (for a sewing guide)
  • Iron and ironing board

Step-by-Step Guide to Sewing Your Curtains

1. Measure Your Windows

Before you start cutting or sewing, accurately measure the width and desired length for your kitchen curtains. Consider where you want the curtains to hang and how much fabric you want to gather on the rod. For my door window valence, I took precise measurements to ensure a perfect fit.

2. Hemming the Tablecloth Fabric

To create clean edges for your curtains, hem the top and bottom of the tablecloth fabric. Fold over a small hem (about 1/2 inch), iron it flat, and then fold it over again to encase the raw edge. Stitch along the folded edge to secure the hem. Repeat this for both the top and bottom of your curtain panels.

3. Creating the Rod Pocket

Now, to create the pocket for your curtain rod, fold down the top hemmed edge. I folded mine down 5 1/4 inches to accommodate my wide pocket curtain rod and create a slight ruffle above the rod. Pin this fold in place.

Stitch across the folded edge to create the rod pocket. I used a few pins to keep the fabric aligned, ensuring a straight and even seam. Measuring periodically helps to stay on track.

4. Sewing the Top Flange (Optional)

For a decorative flange above the rod pocket, sew a straight line 1 1/4 inches down from the top edge of the fabric. To maintain a straight line, I used a piece of painter’s tape as a guide on my sewing machine. This simple trick ensures a professional-looking finish.
