George Walton Mitchell: A Pioneer in Banking and Community in New Mexico

George Walton Mitchell, a respected figure in New Mexico banking and a dedicated community member, passed away on June 25, 2020, in Alto, New Mexico. Born on October 2, 1944, in Dallas, Texas, to Geraldine Bigham Mitchell and Jack Benson Mitchell, both of whom predeceased him, George left behind a legacy of leadership, service, and a deep love for the natural world.

A loving father to his two sons, Chuck and Logan, George is survived by his family including Chuck of Steamboat Springs, CO, his wife Suzi, and their children Kristina, Ellie, and Rowan; Logan of Roswell, NM, his wife Carmen, and their daughter Katerina (Kitty); his first wife Carolyn Mitchell of Roswell, NM; and his partner Sharyl Browning of Alto, NM.

George’s passion for the outdoors and his expertise in the natural sciences were evident throughout his life. He pursued his academic interests, earning a Bachelor of Science in Range Management from Texas Tech University, followed by a Masters in Range Science and an MBA from Utah State University. His knowledge of botany was exceptional, highlighted by his first-place win in the National Range Management Society plant identification competition. Friends often joked about his encyclopedic knowledge of New Mexico flora.

His career path blended his business acumen with a commitment to community banking. After serving in the Army Reserves for six years, George transitioned into finance, starting at Utah Mortgage Loan Company in Logan, Utah, specializing in farm and ranch loans. This experience paved the way for his move to Pioneer Bank in Roswell, NM, an institution that would become central to his professional life. Within a remarkably short period of three years, George ascended to the presidency of Pioneer Bank, a role he held with distinction for 22 years. His dedication to the bank continued even after his tenure as president, as he remained a valued member of the Board of Directors until his passing. While Pioneer Bank’s reach extended across New Mexico, including areas around Ruidoso, George’s leadership was instrumental in shaping its growth and community focus in the region.

Beyond his contributions to Pioneer Bank and the financial landscape of New Mexico, George was deeply committed to volunteerism. He served as past president of the Roswell Rotary Club, earning the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow recognition for his service. His dedication to youth development was exemplified by his long-time involvement with the Conquistador Council of Boy Scouts of America, where he received the Silver Beaver award, the highest honor at the council level. Further demonstrating his commitment to community safety and well-being, George volunteered as a ski patroller at Ski Apache and was an active member of Search and Rescue.

George’s greatest joy was found in the natural world. Outside of his banking career, he spent countless hours fishing at his beloved spot near Bottomless State Park, east of Roswell, sharing his love for angling with his sons. Together with his sons and his lifelong fishing companion Gary Damron, he embarked on numerous fishing expeditions, exploring diverse locations from the Caribbean and the Amazon to the coastlines of Central and South America, Alaska, and the northern US.

In retirement, George relocated to Alto, New Mexico, where he launched Alto Weed Control. He became a familiar figure in Ruidoso and the Hondo Valley, often seen tending to landscapes with his weed sprayer. His adventurous spirit extended to skiing, scuba diving, and hiking, and he frequently explored new terrains on his cherished Harley Davidson motorcycles.

George Mitchell leaves behind a lasting impact and two generations of family who share his passion for nature and the outdoors. He will be fondly remembered as “Papa George” by his grandchildren, who will undoubtedly think of him whenever they encounter a new plant or cast a fishing line.

A memorial service to celebrate George’s life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Conquistador Council of the Boy Scouts of America at 2603 N. Aspen, Roswell, NM 88201, or to a charity of your choice.
