Robert (Bob) Edward Michael, a cherished resident of Pendleton, Oregon, peacefully passed away on May 10, 2020, at the remarkable age of 94. His life, deeply rooted in the Pendleton community and marked by service and dedication, was celebrated by his family and friends at a memorial service streamed from Pendleton Pioneer Chapel Folsom-Bishop. Robert’s journey began in Pilot Rock, Oregon, on March 15, 1926, born to Charles and Ethel Michael. He embodied the spirit of the American West, leaving an indelible mark on his community through his work, volunteerism, and unwavering commitment to his loved ones.
A proud graduate of Pilot Rock High School, Robert’s sense of duty led him to enlist in the Army even before receiving his diploma. Upon returning home, he embarked on a lifelong partnership with his teenage sweetheart, Shirley J Rasmussen. Their marriage on June 6, 1948, blossomed into a 71-year love story, a testament to their enduring bond. Pendleton became their home, where they raised their children, David and Susan, and became integral members of the local fabric.
Robert’s career path showcased his strong work ethic and dedication. After gaining experience with several businesses in Pilot Rock, he found his professional home at Pendleton Grain Growers (PGG). For over 35 years, Robert served as “the gas man,” driving a petroleum truck and becoming a familiar and trusted face on the back roads connecting Pilot Rock to John Day. His routes were more than just delivery paths; they were avenues for building lasting friendships with his customers. Retirement from PGG didn’t equate to slowing down for Robert. He continued to contribute to the agricultural community by driving truck for Newtson Brothers during harvest for over two decades, further cementing his reputation as a reliable and hardworking Pendleton figure.
Beyond his professional life, Robert poured his energy into community service. His passion for youth sports was evident in his long-term involvement with Little League and Babe Ruth. He wasn’t just a coach; he was a board member and groundskeeper, investing countless hours in creating positive experiences for young athletes. Robert’s commitment to service extended to veteran and fraternal organizations. A long-standing member of the VFW and the Pendleton Elks Lodge, he held numerous officer positions within the Elks, demonstrating his leadership and dedication to these groups. The Pendleton Round-Up held a special place in Robert’s heart. As a lifelong volunteer, he could always be found at the VFW Cowboy breakfast, masterfully manning “his” grill and serving up his legendary pancakes, a highlight of the annual event. His faith was also a cornerstone of his life as a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and he further engaged with his community through the Pendleton Travel Club and the Umatilla County Historical Society. Robert’s contributions were recognized when he was named Pendleton First Citizen, Man of the Year in 1981, an honor that reflected the high esteem in which he was held by his fellow townsfolk.
Travel and adventure were also threads woven into the rich tapestry of Robert’s life. He and Shirley explored the vast landscapes of America, but his heart always returned to the cabin nestled above Indian Lake, near Pilot Rock. These trips to the cabin, often filled with hunting, motorcycle rides, snowmobiling, and fishing, created cherished memories with family and friends. Even as life slowed down, Robert remained active and engaged. He enjoyed friendly card games at the Elks Lodge, tending to his yard, and enthusiastically supporting his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their sporting and other activities. Visits with family and friends remained a constant source of joy and connection.
Robert was predeceased by his beloved wife Shirley, his parents, brothers Benjamin, Charles, Eldon, Wallace, and Jim, and sister Barbara Short. He is survived by his children, David Michael (Debbie) of Weston and Susan Platt of Pendleton; grandchildren Bodi Michael, Marty Platt, Kristie Magill, Richard Shepard, Dawn Shepard, and Brandi Harris; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. His legacy of service, dedication, and love will continue to resonate within the Pendleton community and the hearts of those who knew him.
A Celebration of Life, honoring Robert’s remarkable journey, was held with arrangements entrusted to Pendleton Pioneer Chapel. His immediate family gathered at Skyview Cemetery on Wednesday, May 20, 2020. The service was streamed live on Facebook at Pendleton Pioneer Chapel Folsom-Bishop, allowing those near and far to join in remembrance. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested memorial contributions be made to a charity of choice, in care of Pendleton Pioneer Chapel, 131 S. E. Byers Avenue, Pendleton, OR 97801, reflecting Robert’s lifelong commitment to giving back to the community he so dearly loved.
