Robert Edward Michael: A Pendleton, Oregon Life Remembered at Pioneer Chapel

Robert (Bob) Edward Michael, a cherished resident of Pendleton, Oregon, peacefully passed away on May 10, 2020, embracing the Lord’s call to reunite with his beloved wife in eternity. Born in Pilot Rock, Oregon, on March 15, 1926, to Charles and Ethel Michael, Robert lived a life deeply rooted in his community and dedicated to his family.

A proud graduate of Pilot Rock High School, Robert’s commitment to service began early when he enlisted in the Army before even completing his senior year. His heart found its lifelong companion in Shirley J Rasmussen, his teenage sweetheart, whom he married on June 6, 1948. Together, they built their home and raised their children, David and Susan, in Pendleton, Oregon, becoming pillars of the local community.

Robert established a strong work ethic throughout his career. After contributing to several businesses in Pilot Rock, he found his professional home as the “gas man” for Pendleton Grain Growers. For over 35 years, he diligently drove his petroleum truck, becoming a familiar and trusted face on the back roads from Pilot Rock to John Day. His dedication forged lasting friendships with many customers along his routes. Retirement from Pendleton Grain Growers didn’t slow Robert down; he continued to drive truck for Newtson Brothers during harvest for over 22 years, showcasing his tireless spirit.

Beyond his professional life, Robert was deeply involved in the Pendleton community. He dedicated years to Little League and Babe Ruth, not only as a coach but also as a board member and groundskeeper, impacting countless young athletes. His commitment extended to the Pendleton Elks Lodge and the VFW, where he was a long-standing member and held numerous officer positions. The annual Pendleton Round Up was a highlight for Robert, a lifelong volunteer who could always be found enthusiastically manning “his” grill at the VFW Cowboy breakfast, serving his famous pancakes. Faith and community were central to Robert’s life, as evidenced by his membership at the First Presbyterian Church, the Pendleton Travel Club, and the Umatilla County Historical Society. His significant contributions were recognized when he was honored as Pendleton First Citizen, Man of the Year in 1981.

Travel held a special place in Robert and Shirley’s life. They explored the vast landscapes of America, but his heart always returned to the cabin nestled above Indian Lake, near Pilot Rock. These trips, filled with hunting, motorcycle rides, snowmobiling, and fishing, created cherished memories with family and friends. In his later years, Robert found joy in simpler pleasures: card games with friends at the Elks Lodge, tending to his yard, and enthusiastically supporting his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their sporting events and activities. Visits with loved ones remained a constant source of happiness.

Robert was predeceased by his wife Shirley, after 71 years of marriage, his parents, brothers Benjamin, Charles, Eldon, Wallace, and Jim, and sister Barbara Short. He is survived by his children, David Michael (Debbie) of Weston and Susan Platt of Pendleton; grandchildren Bodi Michael, Marty Platt, Kristie Magill, Richard Shepard, Dawn Shepard, and Brandi Harris; 13 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held to honor Robert at a later date. The immediate family gathered for a private service at Skyview Cemetery on Wednesday, May 20, 2020. The service was streamed live on Facebook via Pendleton Pioneer Chapel Folsom-Bishop, allowing those near and far to pay their respects. In remembrance of Robert’s generous spirit, the family suggests donations to a charity of your choice, in care of Pendleton Pioneer Chapel, 131 S.E. Byers Avenue, Pendleton, OR 97801.
