Celebrating a Pioneer Coach: The Legacy of Pat Deacon and the Pat Deacon Classic

LEXINGTON, KY – The hardwood at Transylvania University was buzzing with more than just the squeak of sneakers last night as the Pat Deacon Classic tipped off. This annual women’s basketball tournament is more than just a series of games; it’s a vibrant tribute to Pat Deacon, a true Pioneer Coach who dedicated an incredible 28 years of her life to Transylvania University and the advancement of women’s athletics.

“Pat was a true pioneer in getting women’s basketball started,” Head Coach Greg Todd stated, encapsulating the sentiment of the event. Naming the tournament in her honor three years prior was a natural step, Todd explained, recognizing Deacon’s profound success and lasting impact on countless women who played at Transylvania. Deacon herself expressed her excitement and fondness for the honor, stating, “It is very exciting. I have very fond memories of every year I was there.” Her words resonate with the deep connection she forged with the university and its athletes.

While Deacon is celebrated for her 16 seasons as the head basketball coach, her contributions to Transylvania extend far beyond the court. She also served as a field hockey coach, a respected teacher, and an administrator, showcasing her diverse talents and unwavering commitment to the institution. Academics held a paramount position in Deacon’s coaching philosophy, and she takes immense pride in the academic achievements of her former students. “Many of the students have been outstanding in their field,” she noted, highlighting the holistic approach she took to coaching, nurturing not just athletes, but well-rounded individuals. As a basketball coach, Deacon strategically aimed to instill skills in her players that would transcend the game and prove invaluable in their professional lives. “I think as members of the basketball team, the players learn to work together,” she emphasized, pointing to the crucial life lessons embedded in team sports.

Beyond the wins and losses, Deacon’s tenure at Transylvania was marked by the meaningful relationships she cultivated with referees, fellow coaches, and, most importantly, her students. For Deacon, one of her most significant contributions was “just helping guide students,” a testament to her mentorship and caring nature. Even in retirement, Deacon remains an active and inspiring figure. “One of the things I’ve taken away is that I’ve continued to be active,” Deacon shared, mentioning her participation in three sports and tandem bike rides with her husband. “Even though I’m old, I’m still plugging,” she added with characteristic energy and humor, embodying a lifelong dedication to vitality and engagement.

Though now residing in Florida, Deacon’s heart remains deeply connected to the Transylvania community. Her presence at the inaugural Pat Deacon Classic and her continuous communication with former students demonstrate this enduring bond. “Life’s too short to just cut ’em off when they graduate,” she wisely stated. “I’m a people-person; I like to stay in contact with them.” Her surprise encounters with Transylvania connections, even in Florida, underscore the widespread reach of the university and her own impact. Coach Todd further highlighted Deacon’s ongoing involvement, “She’s not been one that’s just hid out in Florida. Transylvania is a place she comes back to.” He also mentioned the encouraging emails she sends, win or lose, showcasing her unwavering support for the program. “She’s always been behind the program. She always wants our program to be the best it can be,” Todd affirmed. For Deacon herself, “It is a very special place to me,” a sentiment clearly reciprocated by the entire Transylvania community.

The success of women who played under Coach Deacon is a powerful testament to her coaching prowess. Among them is Sherry Holley, a Transylvania Hall of Fame member who sponsors the Pat Deacon Classic through her employer, Hilliard Lyons. Holley’s support is deeply appreciated by Coach Todd, who stated, “Sherry is a big fan and she’s helped our program.” This year’s tournament features Roanoke College, Midway College, and Maryville College, brought together during the winter break, which allows for teams from further distances to participate. “We play the week after finals,” Coach Todd explained, “It’s easier for teams to travel.” Deacon expressed her enthusiasm for the participating teams, stating, “I’m excited for the teams that are in it. Coach Todd has done a great job of recruiting different teams. I hope he will continue to do that.” The Pat Deacon Classic is now paired with the Don Lane Classic for men’s basketball, creating a comprehensive celebration of Transylvania basketball legacy. “Last year we joined with the boys,” Coach Todd said, “who participate in the Don Lane Classic starting Tuesday evening.” He “felt like they would be paired well together,” recognizing the shared history and spirit of both programs.

As the Transylvania women’s team prepared to face Roanoke College on the court, the Pat Deacon Classic stood as a powerful reminder of the enduring legacy of a pioneer coach. Pat Deacon’s dedication, mentorship, and unwavering spirit have not only shaped the women’s basketball program at Transylvania University but have also inspired generations of female athletes. The tournament bearing her name is a fitting tribute to her remarkable contributions and the pioneering role she played in women’s sports.
