Discover Pioneer History at Yosemite History Center

Step back in time and immerse yourself in Pioneer History at the Yosemite History Center. This unique outdoor museum in Yosemite National Park showcases a collection of authentic historic buildings, each with its own story to tell about the individuals who shaped the park’s development. Explore the lives of early settlers and visionaries through interpretive signs and preserved structures, offering a glimpse into Yosemite’s rich past.

Originally relocated to Wawona in the 1950s and 60s from various locations within Yosemite National Park, these buildings were carefully preserved to create a dedicated space for interpreting Yosemite’s history. This relocation project was essential to both accommodate modern park facilities and to ensure the legacy of Yosemite’s pioneers was not forgotten. The History Center stands as a tribute to the endeavors, experiences, and challenges faced by those who played a pivotal role in establishing Yosemite as a treasured national park.

Throughout the year, the Yosemite History Center welcomes visitors to wander its grounds and discover the stories behind each building through informative outdoor exhibits. During the summer months, the experience is further enriched with special attractions. Step inside the Chinese Laundry and the Acting Superintendent’s Office to view exhibits, enjoy a memorable horse-drawn wagon ride, or witness skilled blacksmiths demonstrating traditional iron forging techniques using a coal forge.
