Celebrating the Life of Jack Ray Lester: A Prescott Pioneer Remembered

Jack Ray Lester, a man whose life story reads like an adventurous novel, peacefully passed away on May 2nd, 2021, in Prescott, Arizona. Known for his infectious humor and kind spirit, Jack lived a life brimming with love for his family, passion for football, and loyalty to his friends. His final words, a heartfelt “thank you” to his beloved wife Nita, encapsulate the gratitude and warmth that defined him.

Born with an adventurous spirit, Jack’s early life took a turn when he chose to serve his country in the Marines. At a young age, he bravely served in Okinawa for four years, a testament to his courage and dedication. This pivotal decision shaped him into the resilient and resourceful man he became. Later in life, Jack’s adventurous nature wasn’t confined to his military service. He was known for his playful antics, like the time he famously piloted a backhoe down a mountain simply “because he could,” showcasing his fearless and fun-loving approach to life. These stories paint a picture of a man who embraced every moment with zest and a touch of daring.

After his service, life led Jack to Tucson, where a simple glass of milk at a local restaurant changed his destiny forever. It was there he met Nita, the woman who would become his wife and the love of his life. Their meeting, sparked by repeated visits for that glass of milk, blossomed into a 44-year marriage filled with love and companionship. Jack often joked that Nita was the “best fifty-three cents he ever spent,” a testament to his enduring affection and playful humor.

Jack’s professional life was marked by significant contributions to infrastructure across diverse landscapes, including Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii. His work was instrumental in building and developing communities, showcasing his skill and work ethic. In 2004, Jack and Nita chose the serene environment of Prescott, Arizona, to settle down. They relished the fresh air and the towering pine trees, finding peace and joy in their Prescott home. The Arizona Pioneer Cemetery in Prescott, with its historical significance, would later become his final resting place, deeply connecting him to the pioneering spirit of the region.

Jack Lester’s legacy extends through his loving family. He is survived by his wife Nita, his children Margail (Enrique), Reagan (Michelle), Talyon, Chris, and Jalen (Esther), along with thirteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. His ability to connect with people was remarkable; he could reconnect with old friends as if no time had passed, always with laughter and genuine warmth. As the last of his family to pass, his loved ones find comfort in knowing he is now reunited with those who went before him.

A visitation to honor Jack’s life was held on Friday, May 7, 2021, at 9:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 10 AM at Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home, Prescott Chapel. Graveside services with full military honors took place at 11:30 AM at the Arizona Pioneer Cemetery, a fitting tribute to his service and pioneering spirit. Following the services, a reception and celebration of Jack’s life was held at Gold Water Lake, Original Pavilion, allowing friends and family to share cherished memories of this remarkable man. Jack Ray Lester will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on through the stories of his kindness, humor, and adventurous life in Prescott, Arizona, and beyond.
