Seyfarth’s Pioneers and Pathfinders series continues to lead the way in exploring critical issues facing the legal industry. This time, our virtual roundtable convened a panel of experts to dissect the rapidly evolving challenges posed by disinformation and deepfakes in the digital age.
Deepfakes, essentially manipulated or AI-generated media convincingly portraying real events, people, or audio, are no longer a futuristic concept. They are a present and escalating threat. While synthetic media has legitimate uses, the potential for deepfakes to spread disinformation is causing widespread concern. From impacting political landscapes, as seen in the U.S. presidential elections, to celebrity scandals like the Taylor Swift deepfake controversy, and even sophisticated scams costing businesses millions, the dangers are multifaceted and far-reaching.
The urgency for organizations to understand and mitigate the risks associated with deepfakes is paramount. This is not just an IT issue; it’s a boardroom concern. The World Economic Forum’s 2024 Global Risks Report identifies misinformation and disinformation as the number one near-term global risk, underscoring the severity of the situation. Our expert panel tackled critical questions to equip leaders with the knowledge to navigate this complex landscape:
- What are the most significant deepfake risks that organizational leaders must address for their businesses and customers?
- How are deepfakes complicating legal proceedings and evidentiary standards in courtrooms?
- What legal frameworks are currently in place to combat deepfake misuse and offer protection against disinformation campaigns?
- What technological advancements and best practices can companies adopt to proactively defend against deepfakes and the spread of disinformation?
- How can organizations effectively educate employees and stakeholders about the growing deepfake threat?
This roundtable offered a crucial opportunity to gain insights from industry pioneers and become a leader in navigating the evolving challenges of the digital era.
