The community of Maui and beyond mourns the loss of James “Jim” Howard Lennon Jr., longtime co-owner of the historic Pioneer Inn Maui Hawaii, who passed away peacefully on June 30, 2024, at the age of 74. Just under a year after the devastating Lahaina fire claimed the iconic Pioneer Inn, Lennon’s passing marks another poignant moment for those who cherished this landmark and its place in Maui’s history.
Becky Lennon, his wife and business partner of fifty years, shared a heartfelt tribute to her husband, highlighting a life filled with accomplishment, service, and a deep connection to the island of Maui.
Born in Dallas, Texas, Jim Lennon’s journey was one of diverse experiences and unwavering dedication. After graduating from Highland Park High School in 1968, he pursued higher education at the University of Arkansas and later earned a master’s degree from Texas A&M University. His early career took him to Europe as the European director for the United States Meat Export Federation, where he played a crucial role in international trade. Later demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit, Lennon founded several successful businesses focused on supplying pharmaceutical companies.
However, it was his commitment to the Pioneer Inn Maui Hawaii that defined his last 26 years. Together with Becky, Jim became the steward of this beloved Front Street hotel, the oldest operating hotel on Maui before its tragic loss in the 2023 wildfires. He was known for his warm hospitality, welcoming guests from around the globe and fostering a sense of community within the historic walls of the Pioneer Inn. The Pioneer Inn was more than just a business for Jim; it was a piece of Maui’s heritage that he passionately maintained and shared.

Beyond his professional life at the Pioneer Inn, Jim Lennon was deeply committed to service. He was an active member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Lahaina Sunrise Rotary Club, embodying a spirit of giving back to the community he loved. His passions extended to the outdoors, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and exploring different cultures through his extensive travels.
Jim Lennon is survived by his wife Becky, his daughter Heather O’Dea (Jim), his son James “Bryan” Lennon (Leslie), nine grandchildren, his sister Kelly Lennon, and niece Hailey Lennon. He is also remembered by his loyal dog, Sam. He was predeceased by his parents, James Howard Lennon, Sr. and Elizabeth Lynn Hailey.
A funeral service celebrating Jim’s life was held on July 10th at St. Bernard of Clairvaux. In remembrance of Jim’s generous nature and dedication to the community, the family requests that donations be made to the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunrise in lieu of flowers. Jim Lennon’s legacy as a compassionate businessman, dedicated community member, and loving family man will be fondly remembered by all who knew him and by the spirit of the Pioneer Inn Maui Hawaii itself.
