Born on July 16, 1959, Steve was the cherished son of Robert “Bob” and Florence (Tindell) Udelhofen. Growing up in Platteville alongside his two brothers, Steve’s childhood was filled with the joys of golfing, hunting, fishing, bowling, and playing ball, passions that would remain with him throughout his life. His athletic talents shone during his time at Platteville High School, where he participated in basketball, golf, and baseball, graduating in 1977.
Steve found his lifelong love in Tina Gerlach, and they married on June 19, 1981. Their journey began in Platteville before moving to Newton, Iowa, where they expanded their family and created lasting home. Supporting their children in all their sporting endeavors was a central part of their family life. Steve’s professional path included managing the Elk’s Lodge for several years and then running a convenience store, Juice and Junk. Later, career opportunities led them to Sauk City, WI, where Steve took on the role of manager at Star Flooring.
After Tina’s passing in 2010 and with their sons grown, Steve returned to Platteville, seeking the comfort of family. In Platteville, he contributed his skills to Nordstroms in Dubuque, assisted at K & K Flooring, and managed the food and bar service at Platteville Country Club with his sister-in-law, Ann.
The last 17 years brought immense joy to Steve through his nine grandchildren. He was especially proud of his eldest grandson’s burgeoning talent for bowling, a sport close to Steve’s heart. Visiting his children and their families was a source of great happiness. Steve remained active in various pursuits, including a golf league with loved ones, a bowling league with his youngest son and brother, and cherished trips to the cabin in Warrens with Rob and Ann for fishing and hunting. His final hunting trip with his brother and best friend, Rob, was particularly special, filled with storytelling and brotherly bonding. Steve treasured moments spent with his three sons and their wives, his grandchildren, his brother, and his many friends and family members above all else.
The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to Agrace Hospice for their compassionate care and support during Steve’s final journey. Special thanks are also extended to the many family members and friends who provided invaluable assistance and comfort.
Steve is lovingly remembered by his three sons: Justin, and his children Austin, Dylan, Destiney, and Bentley; Steven (Emily) and their children Steven James “SJ” and Violet; and Shannon (Kassidy) and their children Landon, Aurora, Kastiel, and Temperance; and his brother, Rob (Ann) Udelhofen and their children Jesse, Joshua, and Jamie. He was predeceased by his parents, Bob and Florence; his beloved wife, Tina; and his brother, Michael.
Dad, Grandpa, Brother, Uncle, Friend, Thank You for being part of all of our lives, you brought us so much love, joy, and happiness. You will forever be in our hearts and minds! You will never be forgotten. Until we meet again, fly high with the Angels! – All our love.
