For half a century, Pioneer Log Homes of B.C. has been synonymous with handcrafted excellence and the enduring allure of log home living. Founded by Bryan Reid Sr., the company marks its 50th anniversary, a testament to Reid’s unwavering passion and dedication to the craft. Looking back on this remarkable journey, Reid reflects with immense satisfaction, “I did not regret one day, not one minute, not one second.” His sentiment encapsulates a career built on hard work, strong relationships, and a deep love for log homes.
Born from humble beginnings and fueled by a childhood immersed in the rugged beauty of British Columbia, Reid’s story is intrinsically linked to the landscape that inspires his company’s iconic creations. His early experiences trapping with his stepfather, Albert “Bert” Chevigny, instilled in him a profound respect for nature and the resourcefulness required to thrive in the wilderness. These formative years, spent in simple cabins heated by wood stoves, laid the foundation for his appreciation of log structures as more than just buildings – they were symbols of shelter, resilience, and a connection to the land.
Reid’s journey into log home construction began with a personal need. As a young father wanting to provide for his growing family, he envisioned building a log home in Commodore Heights, near Williams Lake. Seeking expertise, he turned to Sampson Jack of Riske Creek (Tl’esqox First Nation), a skilled log home builder renowned within his community. Jack became Reid’s mentor, guiding him through the traditional techniques of log home construction using local materials. Together, they built Reid’s first home from local pine harvested with his friend Hans Ploessl. This 1,024 square foot home, a significant undertaking in 1973, became a local attraction, sparking interest in a building style that had become rare in the region.

A turning point arrived when a client from the coast commissioned Reid to build a log home in Chimney Valley. Balancing his day job as a parts manager for Datsun with his burgeoning passion, Reid dedicated nights and weekends to this new project. The demand for his handcrafted log homes grew steadily, leading him to involve his brothers, André and David Chevigny, and eventually his son, Bryan Jr., in the craft. What started as a personal endeavor was evolving into a family legacy.
In 1986, Reid made a pivotal decision, selling his share of Chuck’s Auto Supply Ltd. to fully commit to his dream. He partnered with Jim Redekopp and established Pioneer Log Homes on the Pioneer Ranch in Horsefly Road. The name, inspired by the ranch, perfectly captured the spirit of their venture. Pioneer Log Homes quickly gained recognition for its quality and craftsmanship, expanding its reach beyond local borders.
The year 1983 marked Pioneer Log Homes’ entry into the U.S. market, with their first project in Eugene, Oregon. Despite the challenges of a 25% duty due to the lack of free trade agreements at the time, the company persevered. Reid credits the subsequent North American Free Trade Agreement for significantly boosting Pioneer Log Homes’ growth, enabling smoother trade between Canada and the U.S. and opening up vast new opportunities.
Today, Pioneer Log Homes operates from four locations, including 153 Mile, managed by Reid’s grandson Bryan Reid, continuing the family tradition into its third generation. Other sites include 100 Mile House, Xatsull First Nation, and Williams Lake First Nation, reflecting the company’s deep roots in the region and commitment to local communities. In 2017, Reid Sr. passed the torch to his son, Bryan Reid Jr., ensuring the continued success and evolution of Pioneer Log Homes.
Pioneer Log Homes’ story took a captivating turn in 2014 with the debut of “Timber Kings” on HGTV. The television series offered viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the intricate process of crafting these magnificent log homes in the Cariboo region. Episodes showcased the journey of each home, from meticulous handcrafting to disassembly, shipping, and reconstruction at often stunning international locations. Reid himself travelled extensively, overseeing projects across the globe, from Germany to Alaska, managing complex logistics to ensure each home was flawlessly reconstructed.
The signature cedar logs used by Pioneer Log Homes are sourced from the pristine forests of Haida Gwaii and near Bella Bella. These premium logs are carefully selected, barged, and transported to Pioneer’s building sites, underscoring the company’s commitment to using the finest materials.
Now fully retired, Bryan Reid Sr. is channeling his passion into a new project: a showroom within his home in Lac La Hache. This space will serve as a living museum, showcasing the rich history of Pioneer Log Homes and Reid’s personal journey. Exhibits will feature company brochures, vintage tools, photographs, and books that inspired Reid’s early building techniques. A dedicated wall will honor U.S. presidents, reflecting Reid’s appreciation for North American business and opportunity. Another highlight will be the iconic Cedar Rocket, the record-breaking log car that cemented Pioneer Log Homes’ reputation for innovation and ingenuity.
The Cedar Rocket, built in collaboration with Gerald Overton, achieved a Guinness World Record as the fastest motorized log car in 2015. Its subsequent auction for $350,000 US, with proceeds donated to veterans groups, exemplifies Reid’s philanthropic spirit and commitment to giving back. His contributions have been recognized with accolades such as the American flag flown over a special operations task force headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan, in his honor.
Looking ahead, Reid is also finalizing a book with retired RCMP officer Kimberly Tent, sharing his insights on achieving success. His message is clear: “There’s always the opportunity. All you have to do is take your brain to work.” This philosophy, combined with passion, perseverance, and a dedication to quality, has defined Bryan Reid Sr.’s 50-year journey with Pioneer Log Homes Of Bc, leaving an indelible mark on the log home industry and inspiring generations to come.
