Pioneer has launched its latest flagship AV receiver, the Elite VSX-LX805, marking their first product under Premium Audio Company. Priced at $2,999, this receiver is generating buzz as a potentially high-value option for home theater enthusiasts. Pioneer Elite emphasizes that the VSX-LX805 is engineered to deliver “exceptional audio performance and studio-level processing” for discerning customers.
The Pioneer Elite VSX-LX805 is configured as an 11.2-channel receiver, boasting a power output of 150 watts per channel (with 2 channels driven at 0.08% THD). It shares feature similarities with the recently announced Integra DRX-8.4 AVR, but comes in at a more accessible price point, approximately $200 less. Both models incorporate premium 32-bit ESS Sabre DAC chips, known for providing “unprecedented dynamic range and ultra-low distortion.” To put this in perspective, audiophiles seeking ESS Sabre DACs in Denon’s 2023 lineup would need to consider the significantly pricier Denon AVR-A1H, while Marantz users would look at the AV 10 processor, both costing considerably more.
The Elite VSX-LX805 features a newly designed symmetrical class-AB amplifier section. This includes fan-shaped, anti-resonant extruded aluminum heat sinks designed for efficient heat management, along with custom hi-grade 18,000uF capacitors intended for dynamic audio performance. This design choice signals a possible shift away from Class D amplification by Pioneer, contrasting with brands like NAD and Marantz that are increasingly adopting Class D. While Pioneer’s website still highlights the merits of their Class D amplification, past tests of models like the Pioneer SC-07 with ICE amplification showed limitations with 4-ohm loads. There is anticipation that the VSX-LX805 will overcome these limitations, with Pioneer stating that the amplifier balances “consumption and output requirements for optimal performance.” This may indicate a multi-rail design, similar to those used by Denon and Marantz, to enhance efficiency at lower power levels. The receiver includes a shielded power transformer to minimize noise, and a redesigned chassis aimed at reducing vibration.
In terms of connectivity, the VSX-LX805 offers 6 HDMI inputs and two outputs, all supporting 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz video with a 40Gbps bandwidth. The Zone 2 output provides 4K capability. A key differentiator from recent Denon and Marantz receivers is the inclusion of a full-bandwidth Dirac Live room correction license with the Elite VSX-LX805, whereas it’s an additional cost for those brands. Furthermore, Dirac Live Bass Control, still absent in current Denon/Marantz offerings, will be available for the Pioneer Lx805 upon launch. (Dirac Live Bass Control licenses are sold separately). For users preferring not to invest in Dirac Live Bass Control, Pioneer’s Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration System (MCACC) is included. The latest version of MCACC is designed to analyze phase differences and dynamically adjust for timing discrepancies between the main speakers and the LFE signal directed to subwoofers. For immersive audio, the VSX-LX805 supports Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, IMAX Enhanced, and Auro3D. Auro3D support is expected via a firmware update in June 2023, and Roon Ready certification is planned for a September firmware update.
Rob Standley, Senior Vice President of Global Brands for Premium Audio Company, stated:
“We took extra time and care to make sure the 805 features the latest and best audio performance possible, including upgrades in digital audio processing, room tuning, high-res streaming capability, as well as the inputs and outputs, to ensure the Elite customer has the best experience with their connected gear. We also spent time meticulously listening with our engineers, making adjustments to the circuit path to ensure the most dynamic and expressive performance, honoring the brand’s promise to bring the listener as close as possible to the artist’s intent.”
Pioneer LX805: Bridging the Gap to Integra?
The Pioneer Elite VSX-LX805 incorporates “audiophile-quality stereo balanced connections,” although these are limited to a single stereo input and output for the front Left/Right channels. In comparison, the slightly more expensive Integra DRX-8.4 AVR offers five XLR outputs, covering front LCR channels and two independent subwoofers. The Pioneer LX805 provides RCA subwoofer outputs and, like the Integra, supports two independent subwoofers (with an option for two more in parallel). This is an area where newer Denon and Marantz models offer an advantage, with higher-end models starting from the Denon AVR-X3800H offering four independent subwoofer outputs and advanced LFE bass management. The significance of this feature depends on individual home theater configurations. Despite this limitation, the VSX-LX805 appears to be a compelling new flagship receiver from Pioneer Elite.
For those considering a new high-end AV receiver, the Pioneer LX805 presents an interesting proposition. Will you opt for the new Pioneer flagship, or invest a bit more in the Integra DRX-8.4 for its expanded features? Share your opinions in the comments below or in our related forum thread.
