The Pioneer Motorsport Story: From Humble Beginnings to Industry Leader
The journey of Pioneer Motorsport is a testament to passion, dedication, and a commitment to serving the powersports community. What began in the late 1960s as a small garage operation has evolved into a leading dealership, renowned for its extensive product range and exceptional customer care.
It all started in 1964 when Ken Armstrong, fueled by an entrepreneurial spirit, started a small business from his garage in Sardinia. Initially, Ken focused on Hus Ski snowmobiles, a venture supported by his wife and a small team. By 1966, recognizing an opportunity for growth, Ken expanded his offerings to include Scorpion snowmobiles. This proved to be a pivotal moment, paving the way for further expansion.
The addition of the Ski-Doo line of snowmobiles marked a significant turning point. “Ken Armstrong Ski Doo” was born, transforming the garage business into a recognized dealership. Ken’s son, Terry, became increasingly involved, working alongside his father and learning the ropes of the business. The success of Ski-Doo propelled further growth, leading Ken to construct a dedicated facility on Myers Rd, adjacent to his home. In 1970, Ken Armstrong Ski Doo was honored as the Dealer of the Year for the Northeast region, a testament to their early success and commitment to excellence within the motorsport industry.
In 1973, another significant opportunity arose. Ken Armstrong Ski Doo acquired Pioneer Motorsport, a local Suzuki franchise in Yorkshire. Ken recognized the value of the Pioneer Motorsport name and decided to retain it. The Suzuki brand broadened the product offerings and filled the expanded showroom on Myers Road. The business continued to thrive, and the Pioneer Motorsport team grew to around ten employees.
The late 1980s and early 1990s brought further expansion and solidified Pioneer Motorsport’s position in the market. In 1989, as Ken began to transition responsibilities to Terry, Pioneer Motorsport embraced the Sea-Doo brand of personal watercraft. This was quickly followed by the acquisition of Yamaha in 1990 and Kawasaki in 1991. From a modest start with Hus Ski snowmobiles, Pioneer Motorsport had become a multi-line dealership, offering customers a comprehensive selection of top-tier powersports vehicles.
1993 saw another key member join the family business. Terry’s wife, Michelle, left her restaurant career to manage the office duties, overseeing the crucial Parts, Sales, and Service departments. In 1997, Michelle and Terry took full ownership of Pioneer Motorsport, purchasing the business from Ken and ushering in a new era of leadership while maintaining the core values that had driven its success. The addition of Polaris ATVs further broadened their appeal and product range.
By the late 1990s, Pioneer Motorsport had outgrown its Myers Road facility. Increased inventory, expanded service needs, and the growing apparel and accessories lines demanded more space. In 2000, Pioneer Motorsport broke ground on a new, larger facility on Route 16 in Chaffee. This move was instrumental in the continued success of pioneer motorsport, providing not only more space but also enhanced visibility on a major thoroughfare.
In 2008, Pioneer Motorsport embraced the innovative Can-Am Spyder motorcycles, further diversifying their offerings and cementing their reputation as a forward-thinking dealership.
