Point Park University is proactively addressing student food insecurity through a range of supportive initiatives, with the Pioneer Pantry at the forefront. Located conveniently on the first floor of Thayer Hall, just past Student Accounts, the Pioneer Pantry and its adjacent Corner Store offer vital resources to ensure students have consistent access to nutritious food and essential hygiene products.

Pioneer Pantry and Corner Store: Your On-Campus Food Resource

The Pioneer Pantry provides two accessible methods for students to obtain free groceries and personal care items. Understanding the diverse needs and schedules of students, Point Park has established both an online order system and an in-person shopping experience at the Corner Store, making support readily available and discreet.

Convenient Online Ordering for Discreet Pick-Up

For students seeking a quick and confidential option, the Pioneer Pantry offers a seamless online ordering system. This service allows students to pre-select from a variety of food categories, including dairy, fresh fruits and vegetables, grains, and protein sources. Orders are processed using only student ID numbers, ensuring privacy, and are prepared for pick-up outside the Corner Store. This system provides students with the flexibility to collect their orders at their convenience, any time after they are placed.

In-Person Shopping at the Corner Store

The Corner Store provides a welcoming space where students can personally select their groceries free of charge. Stocked with dry goods and shelf-stable necessities such as canned goods and snacks, the Corner Store also aims to provide fresh items like dairy, eggs, and produce whenever possible. This hands-on approach allows students to choose items that best meet their dietary needs and preferences. The Corner Store maintains consistent hours throughout the Fall 2024 semester to maximize accessibility:

  • Monday: 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. & 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Thursday: 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.
  • Friday: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. & 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Monthly Produce Pop-Ups: Fresh and Free

To further enhance access to fresh and healthy options, Point Park hosts monthly Produce Pop-Ups. These events make seasonal produce and dairy items available to all students. Conveniently located in the lounge on the second floor of Lawrence Hall, the Produce Pop-Ups provide an extra layer of support, ensuring students have access to nutritious additions to their diets.

Community Garden: Campus-Grown Goodness

Demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and community involvement, the Pioneer Community Garden grows fresh produce right on campus. Located in the parking lot behind West Penn, the garden is nurtured by Point Park community members and directly benefits students by supplying fresh, locally grown produce to the Corner Store. The Nook: A Kitchen Space for Students

Recognizing that access to food is only one part of the solution, Point Park also offers The Nook. This counter-top kitchen, situated near Point Cafe on the 2nd floor of Lawrence Hall, is equipped with a refrigerator, blender, air fryer, and skillet. The Nook provides students with the tools and space to prepare their own meals using resources from the Pioneer Pantry or elsewhere, promoting food literacy and independence. Students are encouraged to utilize these resources while ensuring the space remains clean for others.
