Joining the Pioneer Scouts: Your First Step
Before you can even think about targets, you need to officially become a Pioneer Scout. Head to the Pioneer Scout Camp, situated in the northern region of the map. Specifically, look just north of Grafton Dam, where you’ll spot a prominent tower on your map.

Upon arriving at the camp, proceed past the entrance and locate the Mr. Handy robot stationed to your left. Initiate a conversation with him. This helpful robot will guide you through the initial steps to become a Pioneer Scout recruit.
Finding the Shooting Test Location
With your Pioneer Scout initiation complete, navigate to the shooting range. From the camp entrance, turn right and walk around the mess hall building. You’ll quickly notice a small bridge. Cross this bridge to arrive directly at the shooting range.
Preparing for the Test: Acquiring a Crossbow
Before you can begin the shooting test, you’ll need a crossbow. Fortunately, the Pioneer Scouts conveniently provide the crossbow plans right at the shooting range. Look for them near the speaker box within the range itself.

Once you have the plans, visit a weapons workbench to craft your crossbow. If you’re short on materials or haven’t unlocked the Gunsmith perk, don’t worry! Crossbows can be found in several locations throughout Appalachia:
- Southwest outskirts of the Palace of the Winding Path
- Locked storage room in the basement of the Sons of Dane Compound
- Basement of the Bootlegger’s Shack
- Southern cabin at the Middle Mountain Cabins
Explore these locations to find a crossbow if crafting isn’t immediately feasible.
Taking the Pioneer Scouts Shooting Test
With your crossbow in hand, return to the shooting range and interact with the speaker. This action will initiate the Pioneer Scouts shooting test. Once activated, the challenge begins: you’ll have 90 seconds to achieve a bullseye on each of the five targets positioned around the range. Accuracy and speed are key to passing this test and proving your sharpshooting abilities to the Pioneer Scouts. Successfully hitting all targets within the time limit will earn you rewards and further your progress within the Pioneer Scouts. Don’t forget to engage in camp duties to earn yourself a valuable backpack and other scout necessities!
