Downtown Seattle’s Pioneer Square neighborhood became the scene of a deadly shooting overnight, marking the city’s first homicide in 2025. The incident left one man dead and a woman hospitalized, prompting an active investigation by the Seattle Police Department (SPD). Authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the shooters, as no suspects have been apprehended yet.
The violence erupted at approximately 1:30 a.m. in the vicinity of South Main Street and 2nd Ave. South, right in the heart of Pioneer Square. Responding officers discovered a 40-year-old man deceased inside his vehicle at the scene. Subsequently, police were notified of a 23-year-old woman who had arrived at Swedish Hospital suffering from gunshot wounds. The relationship, if any, between the two victims remains unclear as the investigation unfolds. The woman is currently in stable but serious condition as she receives medical treatment. Investigators are still working to piece together the circumstances that precipitated this act of violence.
A significant amount of evidence was collected at the shooting location, with SPD officers documenting 45 shell casings from multiple firearms. This detail suggests the involvement of more than one shooter and a potentially chaotic and intense exchange of gunfire.
Deputy Chief Yvonne Underwood addressed the grim reality of the situation, stating, “In 2023 we had 74 homicides, last year we had 58, this is our first one of this year.” She further conveyed the department’s condolences, saying, “On behalf of the Seattle Police Department, I want to express my deepest condolences for the families of these victims.”
