During a recent road trip through Pennsylvania, while searching for interesting stops along the way using the Roadside America app, the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine immediately caught my attention. Having previously explored other mining museums, the promise of riding directly into a coal mine via a “coal bucket” train was particularly intriguing and different from previous experiences like the Sterling Hill Mining Museum. Adding to the appeal, there was also the option to ride a vintage steam locomotive, though unfortunately, time constraints meant missing the last train of the day on this visit.
In these unpredictable times, a quick call confirmed that the Pioneer Tunnel in Pennsylvania was indeed open and welcoming visitors. Ticket prices are quite reasonable, with adult tickets around $11 and children’s tickets at $8. Combination tickets are also available for those wanting to experience both the mine tour and the steam locomotive ride. Arriving just before our scheduled mine tour provided enough time to browse the small gift shop, a must for souvenir hunters. A delightful surprise was discovering a smashed penny machine, a personal favorite for collecting inexpensive travel mementos, and a rare find during that particular weekend trip.
As tour time approached, our guide, Joe Keohoe, a friendly and knowledgeable local expert, guided us to the awaiting coal cars. Our group of six comfortably occupied a car, allowing for a mask-free experience once seated and distanced from other groups.
With a gentle jolt, just as warned, the coal car began its journey, rumbling along the tracks into the darkness of the mine. The descent took us 450 feet underground. Once stopped, we disembarked and explored sections of the tunnel as Joe, our guide, shared a wealth of information about the mining process and history. While absorbing the fascinating facts, the aging wooden support beams did spark a fleeting, slightly nervous thought about being deep inside a mountain – all part of the adventure!
The 40-minute tour flew by, with Joe expertly answering every question posed by the group, demonstrating his deep knowledge of the mine and its history. Visiting the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine proved to be an excellent way to break up a long drive, stretch our legs, and learn something new. The cool 50-degree temperature inside the mine was also a welcome respite from the summer humidity above ground!
