Salem, Massachusetts, is a city steeped in history and mystery, drawing visitors from all over the world with its tales of witches and maritime lore. While the downtown area buzzes with energy, some of the most captivating experiences lie just outside the center, offering a quieter, more reflective glimpse into the past. During my exploration of Salem, chronicled in A Season with the Witch, one of my most memorable moments occurred not amidst the bustling crowds, but in the serene, wooded setting of Pioneer Village Salem, also known as Salem Pioneer Village 1630.

Discovering “The Dark of the Night” at Pioneer Village
My unique encounter unfolded during an event called “The Dark of the Night,” held at Salem Pioneer Village 1630. This living history museum, a recreation of a 17th-century colonial settlement, is nestled within Forest River Park, a short distance from downtown Salem. Stepping into Pioneer Village is like entering another world. The walled village, comprising a collection of rustic buildings, evokes a sense of seclusion and tranquility, despite its proximity to the city.

Originally built in 1930 to commemorate the tercentennial of Massachusetts’ founding, Pioneer Village Salem has experienced periods of neglect and revitalization. However, its historical charm remains undeniable. For “The Dark of the Night,” we were admitted after dusk, guided through the darkness to a crackling fire, joining a small group of eager participants. The crisp New England autumn air was biting, and the darkness was punctuated by the warm glow of Halloween lights emanating from the windows of the surrounding wooden structures.
Entering one of these historic houses, we were treated to captivating ghost stories spun by volunteers dressed in authentic colonial attire. This immersive experience continued as we moved from house to house, each offering a new chilling tale. It was an enchanting and unique way to experience the spirit of Halloween, reminiscent of how trick-or-treating should truly feel – filled with mystery and storytelling.

Walking Through a Movie Set: Hocus Pocus and Pioneer Village
Adding another layer of enchantment to the evening was the realization that we were walking through a familiar movie set. Pioneer Village Salem served as a filming location for the opening scenes of the beloved Halloween classic, Hocus Pocus. The second house we visited, where we listened to a ghostly cornfield story, was none other than Thackery Binx’s cottage from the movie. Imagine listening to ghost stories inside Thackery Binx’s house – a truly magical and meta experience for any Hocus Pocus fan!

Exploring Salem’s Founding Story by Day
So captivated were we by our nighttime experience that we returned to Pioneer Village Salem the following morning for a daytime tour. The weather had shifted to a colder, early-winter chill, with snow threatening on the horizon. Despite the cold, our knowledgeable tour guides, braving the elements, shared a crucial narrative of Salem’s history – the story of the village’s founding, a narrative often overshadowed by the infamous witch trials on Gallows Hill.

These visits to Salem Pioneer Village provided much-needed respite from the typical urban Halloween frenzy. Sometimes, the best way to celebrate the harvest season is to escape the city and journey back in time, even if it’s just for a few hours. Pioneer Village Salem offers just that – a unique opportunity to step away from the contemporary and immerse oneself in the authentic history of early colonial New England.
