Welcome to the Ozaukee County Historical Society (OCHS), a non-profit organization established in 1960 dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich history of Ozaukee County. Among its treasured properties, the Ozaukee County Pioneer Village in Saukville stands out as a captivating destination where history comes to life.
Designated by the Ozaukee County Board of Supervisors in 1962 within Hawthorne Hills County Park, the Pioneer Village began with the relocation of the Ahner House. It has since grown to encompass 24 historic structures, each carefully preserved and furnished to represent life in Ozaukee County dating back to 1840. This immersive outdoor museum offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore authentic buildings and artifacts from the past, providing a tangible connection to a simpler era.
Open from mid-May through October, the Pioneer Village invites you to wander through its grounds and discover the stories held within each building. Whether you are seeking a peaceful weekend outing, an engaging educational experience for students, or participation in one of the village’s many annual events, there is something for everyone at Pioneer Village Saukville. Imagine stepping into a blacksmith shop, a general store, or a one-room schoolhouse, each brought to life with period furnishings and exhibits.
Beyond Pioneer Village, OCHS also operates the Hazel Wirth Archives and Research Center in Cedarburg, a valuable resource for genealogical and historical research. Housed in the historic 1907 Interurban Depot, the Archives Center holds extensive collections of family histories, maps, and records. Additionally, Stony Hill School in Fredonia, where Bernard Cigrand first recognized Flag Day in 1885, is another significant OCHS property, highlighting the area’s contribution to national history.
For those looking to become more involved, the Ozaukee County Historical Society warmly welcomes volunteers.
