In a landmark move for sustainable transportation, Saldivar’s Trucking has emerged as the first independent owner-operator in the United States to deploy a Volvo VNR Electric truck for drayage operations. This pioneering step, facilitated by Volvo Trucks North America and its dedicated dealer TEC Equipment, marks a significant stride towards the electrification of the trucking industry, particularly for smaller, independent businesses. Operating at the bustling Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, Saldivar’s Trucking’s adoption of the Volvo VNR Electric underscores the increasing accessibility and viability of battery-electric vehicles for a wider range of trucking operations.
Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America, emphasizes the importance of this milestone, stating, “While large fleets often capture attention for their substantial investments in battery-electric vehicles, it’s crucial to recognize that nearly half of the 3.5 million professional truck drivers in the U.S. are owner-operators managing their businesses with a single truck.” These smaller entities often encounter unique hurdles when transitioning to electric vehicles, ranging from substantial initial capital investments to establishing dependable charging infrastructure. TEC Equipment has played a crucial role in navigating these challenges for owner-operators like Saldivar’s Trucking, providing essential support throughout the transition to battery-electric vehicles. Their commitment to delivering comprehensive assistance and securing necessary funding exemplifies the vital role of dealer partners in transforming the vision of electric vehicle ownership into a tangible reality for fleets of all scales.
The push for zero-emission vehicles in California is significantly influenced by the California Air Resources Board (CARB)’s Advanced Clean Fleet (ACF) Rule, which took effect on January 1, 2024. This regulation imposes zero-emission vehicle mandates on fleets of all sizes concerning new drayage trucks operating at California seaports or intermodal railyards. These regulatory demands can pose considerable financial strain, especially for smaller operators who may lack the immediate capital required for electrification.
Saldivar’s Trucking successfully overcame this financial obstacle by securing $410,000 in funding from CARB’s On-Road Heavy-Duty Voucher Incentive Program (VIP). This program is specifically designed to assist small fleets with 10 vehicles or less operating in California by providing financial aid to replace older, heavy-duty trucks with zero-emission alternatives. The VIP program effectively bridges the gap between the regulatory drive for cleaner transportation and the economic realities faced by small business owners. However, owner-operators often find it challenging to access these grants due to potential impacts on personal income taxes. TEC Equipment collaborated closely with the South Coast Air Quality Management District to secure the CARB funding, ensuring Saldivar’s Trucking could successfully integrate the Volvo VNR Electric truck into their operations.
TEC Equipment’s La Mirada location, a Volvo Trucks Certified Electric Vehicle (EV) dealership, provided comprehensive support to Saldivar’s throughout their electromobility transition. As Volvo’s largest West Coast dealership group, TEC Equipment has been instrumental in shaping the Certified EV Dealership program. Their dedicated fleet support manager and corporate battery-electric vehicle service manager are key resources, assisting the sales team with training and handover processes for all Volvo VNR Electric trucks.
Melanie Des Laurier, New Truck Sales at TEC Equipment, notes the positive reception from Saldivar’s, stating, “Saldivar’s is extremely satisfied with his new Volvo VNR Electric truck, particularly appreciating the upgrade from a previously owned 2010 tractor. The driver training provided effectively addressed any initial concerns about range, and he has fully embraced the ease of use, comfort, and quiet operation of the EV.”
The Volvo VNR Electric deployed by Saldivar’s features a robust six-battery configuration, offering a 565 kWh storage capacity and a 250 kW charging capability. This zero-tailpipe emission truck can achieve an 80% charge in just 90 minutes, providing a range of up to 275 miles. This range adequately covers Saldivar’s operational needs, which include night shifts at the ports and daily routes of 175-200 miles, five days a week. TEC Equipment representatives provided in-depth training to Saldivar’s, covering all aspects of the Volvo VNR Electric truck, both inside and out. This driver training was crucial in enabling Saldivar’s to maximize the range and fully leverage the benefits of the battery-electric technology.
For charging solutions, Saldivar’s utilizes a charging-as-a-service (CaaS) depot managed by Prologis and operated by Performance Team Logistics, a Maersk Company. The CaaS model allows Saldivar’s to efficiently charge his Volvo VNR Electric during daytime hours, typically plugging in around 3:30 am to ensure it is fully charged and ready for the next shift at 4:30 pm. This strategy minimizes operational downtime and streamlines workflow. The TEC Equipment team also facilitated a visit to the CaaS location to train Saldivar’s on the specific charging procedures for his battery-electric truck, further ensuring a smooth transition and operational readiness.
Saldivar’s Trucking’s adoption of the Volvo VNR Electric truck stands as a testament to the growing feasibility and benefits of electric vehicles for owner-operators. This pioneering deployment, supported by TEC Equipment and facilitated by CARB funding and innovative charging solutions, paves the way for a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future for the trucking industry, demonstrating that electromobility is not just for large fleets but also within reach for independent businesses.
