Last night, my arrival at the airport took an unexpectedly delightful turn when I was greeted by none other than the Pioneer Woman herself. Like any true fan, an excited squeal escaped me upon seeing Ree Drummond in person. A warm hug later, and I found my luggage whisked away into her SUV, embarking on an adventure to the famed ranch. The drive stretched over an hour, offering ample time for conversation. Despite our prior communication being limited to emails, the journey felt like a natural unfolding of a much-anticipated meeting. The landscape en route was a stark contrast to my suburban norm – a refreshing expanse of open road, notably devoid of any fast-food chains. This scenic drive perfectly set the stage for immersing myself in a world far removed from the everyday hustle.
As we turned onto a long, secluded road, the Lodge emerged into view, and it was even more breathtaking than I had imagined. Shortly after settling in, Marlboro Man and the kids, affectionately known as “the punks,” stopped by to extend a warm welcome. It was a surreal moment, seeing the entire Drummond family together, especially after having admired them through countless Pioneer Woman Pictures online. There they were, in real life, the faces I knew so well from Ree’s blog, and even Charlie, their somewhat unfortunate skunk-sprayed dog, made an appearance to complete the family portrait, albeit from a distance due to his recent aromatic encounter.
Ree’s mom was also visiting, adding to the welcoming atmosphere. She and the girls, or “punkettes” as I affectionately dubbed them, stayed at the Lodge with me that first night. Their company was much appreciated in the spacious Lodge. After unpacking and a bit of TV, sleep beckoned, promising a new day of ranch life.
Waking up in Oklahoma was an experience in itself. Stepping onto the expansive deck, I was met with a view that stretched endlessly – pure, unadulterated countryside. Looking out, the horizon was unbroken, a far cry from the familiar golden arches of city life.

But closer inspection revealed something far more charming than any fast-food restaurant – a sweet little horse, embodying the ranch spirit.
After getting ready, I explored a bit before Ree joined me. Then, she led me to the heart of the Lodge – the kitchen. Having seen numerous Pioneer Woman kitchen pictures on her website, I was prepared to be impressed, but reality exceeded even those expectations. The sheer scale and functionality of the kitchen were astounding. Two refrigerators, two freezers, twelve burners, three ovens, and three dishwashers – it was a culinary paradise. The Lodge itself was a testament to Ree and Marlboro Man’s renovation prowess, transformed into a stunning space intended for gatherings and, as Ree envisioned, future blogging events.

The view from inside the Lodge was equally captivating. From the baking side of the kitchen, light streamed in, illuminating the hallway that led to four bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. Thoughtful touches like fresh flowers added a welcoming note. On the other side of a grand fireplace, which could double as a rock-climbing wall, was the TV area. The kitchen’s layout even allowed for glimpses of the TV through the fireplace opening – a quirky and functional design detail in this dream kitchen. And about those Le Creuset pots… if any happened to go missing, I swear it wasn’t me, especially not that charming little blue one on the top shelf.

The weather may have been a bit drizzly, but inside the Lodge, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, perfect for a day of baking adventures. Cupcake baking and fondant decorating were on the agenda, promising a day filled with fun and delicious creations.
Ree prepared her signature chocolate sheet cake recipe for the cupcakes, and I was thrilled to document the process. Here she is, expertly mixing flour – and yes, Pioneer Woman is indeed as tall as she appears in pictures! Her height, combined with the cowboy-sized counters, sometimes required a bit of creative photography on my part, including standing on a table to get the right angle. Beyond her height, Ree’s graciousness, charm, and exceptional culinary skills were truly impressive.

One of my favorite shots from the trip captured Ree in the background, a subtle nod to her presence, and showcased her incredible camera, which, I must admit, outshone mine. Here’s the chocolate being melted on the stove, its rich aroma filling the kitchen.

The scent of melting chocolate was simply irresistible, an olfactory prelude to the deliciousness to come. The melted chocolate was then poured into the flour mixture, the beginning of Ree’s famous Chocolate Sheet Cake recipe, which she has detailed extensively on her blog. But, I couldn’t resist capturing a picture of the oven – with its digital dashboard, a baker’s dream.

This next photo, of eggs, might seem simple, but it reminded me of the shared passion for baking that Ree and I both have. It was a small detail, but in a baker’s world, eggs are a cornerstone.

Back to the cupcakes – they were baking beautifully in that magnificent oven. The interior was so pristine and shiny, reflecting the kitchen’s immaculate state.

Two friendly faces, Lillie-beth and Tanner, stopped by during our fondant adventure to film a segment on Ree. Tanner’s infectious energy was a delight to witness. A quick tweet of Tanner’s photo on my Twitter feed caused a flurry of attention, particularly from his newfound admirers.

And then, there’s me! Photos of myself are rarely flattering, but this one, surprisingly, wasn’t too bad. Perhaps the key is the hand-up, 45-degree angle pose – something to remember for future photos. Thanks to Lillie-beth for capturing this moment.
Marlboro Man also made an appearance, seemingly engrossed in Ree’s latest blog post. It’s truly remarkable how Ree manages to bake, entertain, and blog all at once – a testament to her incredible multitasking skills.

Ree always has her camera at the ready, a kindred spirit in photo-taking. It’s comforting to know there’s someone else equally enthusiastic about capturing moments through a lens. These are some of the fondant-covered cupcakes, a sneak peek into Ree’s upcoming tutorial.

While I finished up the cupcakes, Ree began preparing the salad for the next day’s lunch, always thinking ahead and planning delicious meals.

Here are some of the finished fondant cupcakes, a colorful and delightful result of our day’s work, and soon to be featured in Ree’s tutorial. Monday was indeed a long but incredibly rewarding day, extending far beyond our initial expectations. With cakes still to bake for Tuesday, the ovens were back in action.

Again, I couldn’t help but admire those ovens, true workhorses in this baking haven.

This last photo of the day – a lone apple, perfectly placed on the table’s edge – was too picturesque to resist. A fitting end to a day filled with visual delights and culinary adventures. Good night from the Pioneer Woman’s ranch!
