It’s a chance to celebrate past achievements and rally support for the continued success of these incredible female athletes.

The heart of the Toast to Pioneer Women event is the Jean Kilgour Endowment. Established in 1974 by the iconic Jean Kilgour, this endowment is vital to the operational needs of Carroll’s women’s athletic teams. Funds raised directly support essential resources such as travel, equipment upgrades, and team uniforms, ensuring Pioneer athletes have everything they need to compete at their best.

Jean Kilgour, affectionately known as “Teach,” was more than just a faculty member; she was a true pioneer for women in sports. Her 43-year tenure at Carroll University was marked by unwavering dedication and a passion for empowering female athletes. Retiring in 1969, her contributions were rightfully recognized with an induction into the Carroll Athletic Hall of Fame in 1974. Further solidifying her legacy, a Carroll University residence hall was named in her honor, ensuring her name and impact resonate for generations to come.

Athletics Director Michael Schulist emphasizes the significance of the event: “Having an opportunity to honor the great Jean ‘Teach’ Kilgour, while celebrating our past and present women athletes is something I don’t take for granted. Carroll has a strong tradition of excellence in women’s sports, and this event provides the ability to create awareness around these accomplishments while also raising funds for the future of Carroll women’s athletics.”

Jean Kilgour’s influence extended far beyond Carroll’s campus. She was a respected leader in the movement for women’s sports advancement and a prominent community figure who championed physical fitness for all ages. Her expertise as a nationally rated basketball official for over three decades, coupled with her personal athletic achievements in track, golf, fencing, tennis, and sailing, showcase her extraordinary commitment to sports. Her legacy continues to inspire, and the annual Toast to Pioneer Women event is a fitting tribute to her remarkable life and contributions. Jean Kilgour passed away in 1993 at the age of 94, leaving behind an enduring impact on women’s athletics.
