This era saw significant enhancements, including the addition of Italian marble lobby floors, the introduction of three distinct restaurants, and an expansion of the grand ballroom, further cementing its reputation as a luxurious destination.
However, like many downtown areas across America, Lubbock’s downtown experienced shifts in the 1970s. Following the devastating Lubbock Tornado of 1970, a migration towards the south and west impacted the downtown core. By 1975, The Pioneer, mirroring this trend, faced decline. Finally, in 2012, after years of dedicated restoration, The Pioneer reopened and began leasing. Then, in 2018, The Pioneer embarked on its latest evolution with the creation of the Pioneer Pocket Hotel on its third floor. Located directly across from The Pioneer at 1116 Broadway Street, the Millsap Suites offer an extension of the Pioneer experience. This building’s history dates back to 1926, initially housing Shelton’s Shoe Hospital and later becoming the Senate Café in 1931. It further evolved into the Broadway Theatre cinema until 1947 and subsequently became home to Skibell’s of Lubbock, a popular women’s clothing store in the 1950s. In 1987, Mike Millsap renovated the building for his law firm, sharing the space with other businesses over the years. Notably, the second floor continues to house a law office to this day, maintaining a link to its professional past.
