Robert P. Tubandt III, formerly of Wadena, Minnesota, passed away at the age of 59 in Cordes Lakes, AZ, on Tuesday, January 12, 2021. Surrounded by his loving family, Robert’s passing marks the end of a life characterized by dedication to others, unwavering faith, and remarkable resilience in the face of adversity.
Born and raised in Wadena, Minnesota, Robert was the cherished son of Jean L. Pilgrim and Robert P. Tubandt II & Jan Tubandt. From a young age, Robert, affectionately known as Bobby, demonstrated qualities of politeness, care, and diligence. Like his father, he excelled in boxing, earning Golden Gloves recognition, a testament to his early discipline and strength. He grew up in Wadena alongside his siblings Julie, James, Dana, Drew, and Darren, forming bonds that would last a lifetime. Robert graduated from high school in Wadena, MN, in 1980, marking the beginning of his journey beyond his hometown.
Shortly after graduation, Robert moved to Arizona and established a successful career as a lineman in fiber optics. He became highly respected in his profession, known for his skill and expertise. Robert was blessed with three children, two daughters, Jessica and Jana, and a son, Jacob, who were a source of immense pride and joy throughout his life.
Robert’s life took an unexpected turn when he endured a severe electric shock, an occupational hazard of his profession. Tragedy struck again in 2006 when a workplace accident resulted in the complete amputation of his hand. Demonstrating incredible fortitude, Robert underwent Arizona’s first successful hand transplant. This pioneering surgery allowed him to regain a significant degree of functionality and served as an inspiring example of medical innovation and personal courage.
Despite these life-altering events, Robert’s spirit remained unbroken. He faced each challenge with unwavering strength and a positive outlook. Even after breaking his back in an ATV accident, Robert’s commitment to helping others never wavered. He was known for his generosity and willingness to lend a hand to anyone in need, embodying a selfless and compassionate nature. Those who knew Robert, especially his family and close friends, considered themselves fortunate to have shared in his life. His kindness and loyalty left a lasting impact on all who crossed his path.
A memorial service to celebrate Robert’s life will be held in Minnesota this summer, providing an opportunity for friends and family in his home state to gather and remember a remarkable man who touched so many lives.
