Back in 2021, in my ongoing search for the ideal successor to my trusted Salomon X Ultra 3 shoes, I put the X Crests to the test.
I concluded that the X Crests were best suited as “active office shoes,” perfect for light hikes, city biking, and even office wear.
While they served this purpose adequately, their durability left something to be desired, and they wore out faster than I hoped.

It seems my experience wasn’t unique, as this model is no longer readily available.
Fast forward to spring 2023, and I again found myself needing versatile footwear for “active office” scenarios.
With the shift post-COVID, I was back in an IT-focused role. I needed all-purpose shoes that could handle biking to work or running errands, the occasional after-work hike, and daily wear, without suffering the wear and tear of my dedicated trail shoes.
That’s when the Salomon X Ultra Pioneer caught my eye. They appeared to be Salomon’s take on the classic Merrell Moab-style shoe within the Ultra line. The construction seemed more robust than the X Crest, suggesting improved longevity.
I decided to purchase a pair, wore them for a full year, and was so satisfied that I bought a second pair. I anticipate buying a third pair later this year, as these shoes have met and exceeded my expectations for their intended use.
Initial Impressions of the X Ultra Pioneer
The Salomon X Ultra Pioneer features a combination of fabric and leather in its construction, incorporating ample ventilation panels. A Men’s size 10 weighs in at 390g/14 oz. This weight is heavier than dedicated trail running shoes but lighter than comparable shoes like the Merrell Moab 3s. With a price point of around $115, the Salomon Pioneers are competitively priced in the all-purpose outdoor shoe market.
The fit feels slightly less voluminous than I recall from the Ultra 3s and noticeably less so than my preferred Terraventure 4s.

The tread pattern appears sufficiently aggressive for most hiking conditions. However, the sole itself isn’t particularly stiff. This suggests they are better suited for established trails rather than extensive off-trail adventures.

Comfort-wise, the shoes are comfortable, although they don’t offer the same responsive feel as my more specialized outdoor footwear.
These observations aren’t criticisms, but rather define the X Ultra Pioneer’s niche: a versatile, all-purpose shoe suitable for urban environments and less demanding outdoor activities.
Salomon X Ultra Pioneer in the Field
As mentioned, my primary objective for these shoes was to have a “Jack-of-all-trades” outdoor shoe. I needed something less prone to wear and tear than my dedicated trail shoes, which I typically replace every 3-4 months due to heavy use.
I do wear the X Ultra Pioneer regularly in my IT office job. My work sometimes involves physical tasks. Additionally, they are my go-to for biking around town and occasional after-work hikes at the sites where Joan and I volunteer in Moab.

Adding a new dimension to their use, and the primary reason for this review update, is my renewed involvement in Search and Rescue (SAR) activities in recent months.
My current supervisor is supportive and allows me to respond to SAR calls during work hours, trusting that I’ll manage my workload.
Beyond deepening my connection with the local public lands, SAR offers a valuable sense of camaraderie. While I enjoy my “day job” colleagues, teamwork during SAR events has a distinct feel from my usual solo work. SAR calls provide an opportunity to combine my love for the outdoors with helping others.
While many SAR calls occur on or near trails, the terrain is generally less extreme than the backcountry trips Joan and I typically undertake. The intensity in SAR comes from the urgency and nature of the situations.
Alongside my “go bag” and readily available clothing, I’ve found the X Ultra Pioneer to be well-suited for SAR duties. Having transitioned away from daily sandal wear, these shoes are now my everyday footwear – one less thing to think about when a SAR page comes through.
Whether carrying a litter or participating in a search, the shoes have provided secure footing, consistent comfort, and a more robust feel than many “active wear” shoes that lack true outdoor functionality.
Overall Verdict on the Salomon X Ultra Pioneer
I wouldn’t choose the X Ultra Pioneer as my dedicated full-time outdoor shoe. My preference for venturing off designated trails requires a stiffer sole.
However, for established and maintained trails, urban biking, occasional short off-trail excursions, daily wear, and now SAR activities, the Salomon X Ultra Pioneer excels.

After about a year of moderate use, I anticipate purchasing another pair when my current ones reach the end of their lifespan.
In essence, the Salomon X Ultra Pioneer is the Subaru Outback of shoes.
What does that mean? You wouldn’t take a Subaru Outback on a hardcore 4WD trail, but it’s perfect for hauling gear, navigating moderate dirt roads, reaching the ski slopes, and everyday errands.
The Salomon X Ultra Pioneer fills a similar versatile niche for me, and I believe it fills it exceptionally well.
Disclosure – I purchased these shoes with my own funds.
