His passion for physical activity led him to Chico State University, where he earned a degree in Physical Education, further solidifying his commitment to the world of sports and healthy living.
Beyond the sports field, Gary found solace and joy in the outdoors. He was an enthusiastic hunter and fisherman, with a particular fondness for deer hunting in Walker Ridge. While he appreciated the thrill of the hunt, especially the pursuit of a prized 12-point buck, Gary’s true sporting allegiance lay with the San Francisco Giants. Being an avid San Francisco Giants fan was more than just a hobby; it was an integral part of Gary’s life. He frequently attended games with his beloved friends and family, creating lasting memories and turning these outings into a cherished tradition.
Gary’s involvement in sports extended beyond his own participation and fandom. He was a constant presence at his grandchildren’s sporting events, enthusiastically cheering them on from the sidelines. His dedication to athletics and his community was further recognized when he was inducted into the Colusa County Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012, honoring his achievements as part of the 1970 Williams basketball team. Gary continued to contribute to this prestigious organization by serving on the Hall of Fame committee, ensuring future generations of athletes would be recognized.
Gary Roper is survived by his loving family, including his children Heath Roper and Megan Garcia of Colusa, his brother David Roper of Williams, and his sister Lynda (Mike) Marucheau of Roseville. He is also remembered by his former spouse Deborah Roper (Charlie), daughter-in-law Kim Roper (Charlie), grandchildren Cade and Reese, nieces Haley and Sierra, and close friend Jenny (Eric) Lay and family. Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Kay Roper.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be held on April 15th at 1 PM at the Colusa County Golf Course. Friends, family, and community members are invited to join in honoring Gary. In a fitting tribute to his passion, attendees are encouraged to wear Giants gear or orange and black, the colors of his beloved San Francisco Giants.
