Discover the Pioneer Spirit at Chimney Rock: Your Prairie Camping Escape

Nestled just a stone’s throw from the iconic Chimney Rock, and steeped in the history of the pioneer crossing, lies an unparalleled camping experience. While we’re conveniently located near Highway 71 outside of Gering, Nebraska, Peaceful Prairie Campsites offers a tranquil retreat, a world away from the everyday hustle.

Imagine pitching your tent or parking your camper van directly on the vast prairie. For those with larger RVs and trailers, designated RV sites ensure comfort and ease. Here, on 200 acres of secluded land, bordering the majestic Scotts Bluff National Monument, you’ll discover a panorama unlike any other.

The landscape is breathtaking – a dramatic canyon carved by wind and water, rolling prairie echoing tales of the Oregon Trail, and a thriving ecosystem teeming with wildlife. Awake to the melodious songs of the Meadowlark and the soft, rosy hues of a prairie dawn. Start your day with a hearty breakfast, perhaps featuring fresh eggs courtesy of Lisa and Frank’s hens, as you slowly absorb the serene beauty that envelops you.

This land, once traversed by pioneers on their westward journey, will rejuvenate your spirit. The unique bluff formations, immortalized in pioneer journals, stand as silent witnesses to history. Friendly equine residents, senior horse Tigger and miniature donkey Martha, add a touch of warmth to your welcome. A small, curious herd of cattle may also graze nearby, adding to the authentic prairie ambiance. As evening descends, the enchanting songs of coyotes at dusk provide a natural serenade.

Embrace Prairie Life: Amenities and Activities

All campers benefit from access to refreshing, pure water from a local well, and the unique CAMP SHOWER. Propane cook stoves are perfect for preparing meals. Given the dry climate, campfires are permitted only when conditions are safe and exclusively within provided fire pits. To preserve the prairie’s delicate ecosystem, smoking and open flames are strictly prohibited throughout the year.

Beyond the captivating canyon and expansive prairie, adventure awaits. Mountain biking, hiking, and climbing opportunities cater to various skill levels. Adjacent national park land, a shared treasure of the United States, extends your exploration, becoming an integral part of the stunning vista. While Dome Rock itself is off-limits for climbing, a hike to its base rewards you with panoramic valley views. The open prairie also provides an ideal setting for kite flying, letting your spirits soar with the wind.

Depending on the season, the prairie bursts with life – berry trees, vibrant wildflowers, aromatic American sagebrush, resilient yucca, prickly pear cactus, wild catnip, and a diverse collection of native prairie grasses and medicinal plants.

Site Rules for a Harmonious Stay:

  • Check-in for prairie sites is between 4 PM and one hour before sunset. During the heat of July, arriving around 6 PM is recommended. Earlier arrivals may be possible upon request. Late arrivals after dark are not permitted for safety reasons.
  • Trailers and big rigs require booking an RV Site. The prairie’s fragile ecosystem cannot accommodate towed trailers. RV site development is ongoing, with continuous improvements each season, including the innovative camp shower crafted from a repurposed water tank. The views and hiking access remain exceptional from all sites.
  • Pets are welcome, but dogs must be leashed at all times. Please inquire with the host before booking if bringing a pet. Off-leash pets are discouraged on the prairie due to coyote risks.
  • Only one vehicle per site is permitted. Additional vehicles incur a $35 nightly fee.
  • Check with Lisa upon arrival regarding campfire safety.
  • A porta-potty and fresh well water are available at Base Camp (RV area), accessible to all campers.
  • Pack-in, pack-out trash policy is enforced. A trash receptacle is located in the RV area. (Leave only footprints).
  • Nebraska state laws apply on this property. Non-compliance with site rules may result in immediate departure.
  • Firearms are prohibited in campsites and on the prairie.

Essential Guidelines for Your Prairie Adventure:

For hiking advice tailored to your abilities, Frank and Lisa are happy to assist. Wear sturdy shoes and long pants, as this is a natural environment where rattlesnakes may be present.

  • Wildlife Awareness: While snakes and other wildlife are more commonly observed in the canyon and rocky areas, encounters are infrequent on the prairie. If you encounter a snake on the prairie, slowly retreat and leave the area. Never approach, follow, or disturb a snake. In the unlikely event of a rattlesnake bite, remain calm, call 911 immediately, and then contact Lisa. Report any snake sightings and locations to the camp host.
  • Coyote Encounters: Local wildlife includes Meadowlarks, Great Horned Owls, Mule Deer, Coyotes, Opossums, Raccoons, Skunks, Honey Badgers, Foxes, and various raptors. Coyotes generally avoid people but may be protective if pups are nearby. If you encounter a coyote, stand your ground, make yourself appear large, and slowly back away while making noise. Do not run or turn your back.
