Pioneer Arms AK47 BLEM F.T. First Look: An Affordable Entry into the AK World

The world of AK-pattern rifles offers a vast landscape of options, from high-end custom builds to more budget-friendly variants. Recently, I ventured into the latter category with the purchase of a Pioneer Arms Ak47 BLEM F.T. from Classic Firearms. As someone with prior experience with AK platforms like the WaffenWerks 74, WASR, and NPAP, but seeking a cost-effective option, the Pioneer Arms offering piqued my interest, especially given the mixed reviews surrounding other budget AKs such as the PSA AK101. The price point of the Pioneer Arms BLEM F.T. made it a compelling choice for a new 5.56 AK platform.

Upon unboxing, the initial impression of the Pioneer Arms AK47 BLEM F.T. was surprisingly positive. The iron sights appeared straight and, while not confirmed to be zeroed, the front sight post (FSP) showed clear signs of adjustment, suggesting some level of factory sighting. A visual inspection of the rivets revealed solid construction, with no apparent cosmetic flaws. Minor surface browning, likely superficial rust, was observed on the safety selector and rail rivets, but this was easily removed with routine cleaning, and a protective wax, similar to what is used in sword maintenance, was applied to the receiver for added protection.

Further examination revealed some indications of factory testing. Slight wear on the locking lugs and hammer, manifesting as a minor cosmetic finish wear rather than functional damage, suggested prior test firing. The presence of brass residue on the bolt face further supported this, indicating the rifle had been live-fired before shipping, a reassuring sign of basic quality control checks.

Addressing the “BLEM” designation, the cosmetic imperfections were indeed minor and largely confined to the finish. Wiping down the bolt carrier group (BCG) revealed some areas where the finish readily rubbed off. Similar finish wear was noted in areas where the receiver and dust cover made contact. However, these blemishes appeared purely cosmetic and did not detract from the overall functionality or feel of the rifle. For a firearm intended for practical use, minor finish imperfections are a negligible concern.

Magazine compatibility is a crucial aspect for any AK platform. Initial testing with 5.56 followers from DangusLeatherWorks in surplus 74 magazines revealed a tight fit with Circle 21 magazines. Conversely, commercial Bulgarian steel reinforced magazines fit without issue. Given the shift to the 5.56 cartridge, further magazine testing will be necessary with a wider range of 5.56 specific AK magazines once a sufficient quantity of ammunition is acquired for live fire testing.

In conclusion, the initial inspection of the Pioneer Arms AK47 BLEM F.T. provides a favorable first impression, particularly considering its budget-friendly nature. The rifle exhibits solid construction in key areas, with minor cosmetic blemishes expected of a “BLEM” model. Signs of factory testing are present, and initial magazine compatibility checks show promise. Further live-fire testing will be essential to fully evaluate the performance and reliability of this AK platform.
