Driven by a vision to revolutionize biomanufacturing, Pioneer Lab emerges as a groundbreaking startup at the forefront of synthetic biology. Founded approximately two years ago, the inception of Pioneer Lab sparked from a simple coffee conversation between Devon Stork, PhD, and his co-founder, contemplating the ambitious idea of engineering microbes for terraforming Mars. This initial concept has since evolved into a comprehensive mission to develop robust microbial solutions for both space exploration and terrestrial sustainability.

The journey of Pioneer Lab has been marked by significant milestones. The addition of Una Nattermann as a co-founder further strengthened the team’s expertise. Furthermore, Pioneer Lab has successfully connected with a network of distinguished scientists and programs, including Samantha “Pixie” Piszkiewicz, PhD, Nils Averesch, Charles Cockell, and DARPA’s B-SURE program. These collaborations underscore the scientific rigor and broad recognition of Pioneer Lab within the scientific community.
A core inquiry driving Pioneer Lab is the underutilization of biology in space science. Biology, recognized as the ultimate green technology, possesses the inherent capability to transform waste into essential resources like food, water, and air – forming a crucial circular economy. This capability is paradoxically under-exploited in space exploration, where closed-loop life support systems are paramount. Pioneer Lab directly addresses this gap by engineering resilient microbes capable of thriving in the extreme conditions of space. These “hardy critters” are designed to facilitate reliable and sustainable biomanufacturing, not only for space missions but also to foster greener industrial practices here on Earth.
