From the moment we arrived at the gates of the Provo Pioneer Village, we were greeted by incredibly welcoming volunteers dressed in authentic pioneer clothing. Their dedication to historical accuracy was impressive, especially the gentleman portraying the blacksmith! One volunteer even brought her daughters, adorably clad in pioneer dresses, who were playing with handcrafted dolls. What struck me most was the volunteers’ genuine enthusiasm to share their knowledge, answer our endless questions, and offer us a personal tour of the pioneer village.
To encourage exploration and engagement, the Provo Pioneer Village provides a fun scavenger hunt. This cleverly designed activity prompted the kids to really pay attention to the exhibits and search for specific pioneer artifacts. The reward for completing the scavenger hunt? An old-fashioned wooden-stick sucker! This sweet incentive definitely motivated my children to take their mission seriously as they explored the village.
While a structured tour was offered, we opted to let our four kids lead the way, each darting off in different directions, eager to explore. Thankfully, the entire Provo Pioneer Village is securely fenced, with friendly volunteers stationed at the single entrance. Since it was a quiet day, with only a couple of other families present, I felt comfortable allowing our older children to explore independently while I kept an eye on the younger ones. It was a joy to watch them take charge and navigate, a welcome change from their usual role of being shepherded around by older siblings or rushed from place to place.
As someone who appreciates order, letting go and wandering without a set path was a little out of my comfort zone. However, the kids absolutely loved the freedom to roam from building to building, captivated by each new discovery at the Provo Pioneer Village.

The kids immediately launched into an imaginative play session, spontaneously taking their places at the small desks. My daughter naturally assumed the role of the “teacher,” a joy to watch unfold! While they were busy with their pretend lessons, I discovered a shelf filled with delightful old-fashioned games and toys, quickly becoming as engrossed in them as my children were.
Exploring further, I admired the authentic garden and heard whispers about potential future additions to the Provo Pioneer Village, including live chickens! Meanwhile, the kids unearthed a playful surprise staged in the outhouse, adding another layer of fun to our pioneer adventure.
Overall, my experience at Provo Pioneer Village was thoroughly positive. We spent nearly two hours exploring and everyone left with a tasty treat – those old-fashioned suckers were surprisingly delicious (yes, I may have sampled each of my kids’!).

While not as expansive, the Provo Pioneer Village is equally well-maintained and offers a captivating glimpse into pioneer life.
